2010932697
Seattle WA: Ouroboros Press / Ars Obscura : "Printed after the 1617 edition at the sign of the Ouroboros" 2010. NEW / Limited to 75 copies only Hand-bound by Ars Obscura Bookbinding. From the Publisher see images - Full black leather handbound with gilt title and device raised spine bands marbled endsheets and silk bookmark. Aviary folding plate. Fine typography with emblematic ornaments. Limited to 75 copies only. Jocus Severus was originally published in 1617 by Count Michael Maier and is here rendered into the English tongue from the Latin text by the remarkably able translator Darius Klein. Like his work on Giordano Bruno's Cantus Circaeus this is the First English Translation. In addition to the new translation the Ouroboros Press edition of Jocus Severus distinguishes itself by employing new emblematic illustration work by Benjamin A. Vierling who in keeping with our publishing style has produced fine illustrative ornaments and a fold-out plate depicting the aviary creatures of the text. These graphic elements complement the typographical details with an effect befitting a piece of fine Renaissance book art. Michael Maier is well known in the historical milieu of alchemy due largely to his important work on alchemy and music Atalanta Fugiens yet his other works have remained obscure and unobtainable until now. An excellent biography of Maier can be found in the work of Hereward Tilton The Quest for the Phoenix: Spiritual Alchemy and Rosicrucianism in the Work of Count Michael Maier 1569-1622. In the foregoing work Tilton indicates the thrust of the Jocus Severus thus: The Jocus Severus takes the form of a court of judgment upon the bird of wisdom sacred to Pallas Athena the Owl in this instance embodying chemia as the highest science. The Owl stands accused of a number of misdemeanours by an assembly of squawking and cantankerous birds who represent the various critics of chemia. Council for the defense is the Hawk; presiding over the court is the Phoenix the symbol of the Work's perfection . . . . After facing her fellow birds accusations the Owl and her Art are eventually vindicated by the Hawk's expert defense and she is adjudged Queen of the Birds by the Phoenix". First English Language Edition. Hard Cover/Full-Leather/Sewn. New. Illus. by Benjamin A. Vierling "Illustrative Ornaments and A Fold-out Plate Depicting The Aviary Creatures Of The Text". 8vo size - 8¾" tall.
Ouroboros Press / Ars Obscura : "Printed after the 1617 edition at the sign of the Ouroboros" hardcover

18512009AG1851. London & New York J & F. Tallis 1851. Original steel engraving / Vintage map. Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. Partly hand-coloured. Plate Size: 33.2 cm x 24.6 cm. Sheet Size: 37.5 cm x 27.3 cm. Vintage 19th century map in very good condition. John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". In 1511 Aguilar left Panama on a caravel sailing to Santo Domingo accompanying the procurator Juan de Valdivia. They were shipwrecked near the Yucatán Peninsula due to bad weather but Aguilar along with a sailor from Palos in Spain Gonzalo Guerrero were two of fifteen survivors. Strong currents brought them in their ship's boat to the coast of the modern-day Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Aguilar and the others were captured by the local Maya and scheduled to be sacrificed to Maya gods. He and Gonzalo Guerrero eventually managed to escape later to be taken as a slave by another Mayan chief named Xamanzana.1 Here he and Guerrero were able to learn the language of their captors. An identical suite of prayers appears in a manuscript Morgan M.292 made for maréchal de France Pierre de Rohan-Gié 1450-1513 who campaigned in Italy with Charles VIII and Louis XII.
Our anthology is centered on the faithful's plea for military success and protection against the dangers of war. The opening prayers in French are rich in chivalric imagery. Next is an uncommon extended version of the Latin Abbreviated Psalter a series of extracts from the Psalms compiled for soldiers and others unable to recite the full daily Office. The texts that follow include a Latin prayer for victory in battle the placeholder n stands in for the name of the supplicant and unusually the long pseudo-Augustinian Prayer for the Troubled in its Italian version.
This last concludes the work of the first scribe who in line with the contemporary trends of luxury manuscript production at Tours adopted a peculiar rounded bâtarde. His hand's nod to the shapes of humanistic Antiqua doesn't mitigate the striking mismatch of language and script in the italian prayer.
In Latin the Gospel readings on the Passion occupy the second half of the manuscript executed in a more traditional hand by a second scribe. attractive uniform decoration unifies our intriguing manuscript. 1746A0068xxxvi167viii96 pages. Octavo 8 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in full leather with decorative gilt and lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. First edition.

Lorenzo Boturini Benaducci born in Italy of noble parentage studied in Milan and lived in Trieste and Vienna. He was a knight of the Holy Roman Empire. Forced to flee Austria because of the war with Spain Boturini arrived in Spain via England and Portugal. In Madrid he met the Condesa de Santibáñez oldest daughter of the Condesa de Moctezuma. The mother authorized him to collect a pension due her as a descendant of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II from the royal treasury in New Spain. Boturini went to New Spain in 1736 where he remained eight years. During those years he assembled a vast collection of paintings maps manuscripts and native codices. He copied more than 500 pre-Columbian inscriptions and made his own drawings of monuments and sculptures and he investigated the history of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe on the hill of Tepeyac. He traveled widely and on his travels brought together the largest collection of Mexican antiquities assembled to that time by a European. Not only did he intend to write the history of the Virgin of Guadalupe but he also had plans to crown her image with a gold crown. For that purpose he sought donations from the bishops and from the public. This brought him to the attention of the colonial government which was suspicious of the motives of a foreigner making this proposal. On June 2 1743 after an investigation the recently arrived viceroy Pedro Cebrián y Agustín had him imprisoned and impounded his collection. He was accused of entering New Spain without license from the Council of the Indies and of introducing papal documents without a royal permit. After eight months in prison Boturini was sent to Spain. He fell into the hands of pirates who eventually released him at Gibraltar. From there he traveled to Madrid in miserable conditions. In Madrid he met Mariano Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia another passionate collector of Indian antiquities. Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia offered Boturini a place to live and financial support and got the Council of the Indies to reconsider his case. Boturini was absolved. The king named him royal chronicler of the Indies ordered that his collection be returned to him and extended an invitation for him to return to New Spain. Boturini however declined to return to New Spain and his collection was never restored. It appears that he was granted recompense and a stipend to work on his projected history of the colony. In Madrid he wrote a history of ancient Mexico unpublished at the time of his death in 1753. The library at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is named for him. The Boturini Collection was formed between 1735 and 1743 to serve as the basis of a projected Historia de América Septentrional. It consisted of many valuable documents the majority of them of Indian provenance. Among these were hieroglyphic paintings that had belonged to Juan de Alva Ixtlilxochitl a descendant of the rulers of Texcoco. Ixtlilxotchitl bequeathed these documents to Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora. The collection was confiscated by Viceroy Pedro Cebrián y Agustín at the time of Boturini's arrest in 1743. It was deposited in the office of the secretary of the viceroyalty. The documents were neglected there for years and suffered considerable pilferage. The subsequent viceroy Juan Francisco de Güemes 1st Count of Revillagigedo granted the historian and antiquary Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia Boturini's friend from Madrid the paintings and documents he solicited for his own studies. On Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia's death they passed to Antonio de León y Gama. He died in 1802 and the collection passed to his heirs. Shortly thereafter 16 paintings were obtained by Alexander von Humboldt during his visit to Mexico in 1802-03. He published them in Vues des cordillères et monuments des peuples indigènes d'Amérique. The originals of these are now in the Berlin State Library. Part of the remainder of the collection may have passed to Father José Pichardo an amateur antiquarian. Joseph Alexis Aubin beginning in 1827 or shortly thereafter obtained important parts of the collection from a variety of sources. He sold his collection to Eugène Goupil who was of French and Mexican descent. This part of the collection passed by donation or purchase to the National Library in Paris where it remains under the name Aubin-Goupil Collection.

George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus.
