2274727 July 1871; 17 James Street Buckingham Gate London S.W. with embossed letterhead of the Athenaeum Club Pall Mall London. 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. The recipient is not named but the item derives from the papers of James Payn the editor of the Cornhill Magazine London. Gallenga begins: 'My dear Sir. The last time I saw you - it may be 20 years ago - you were leaving London to write for Chambers in Edinburgh. I see the Journal now and then and I often fancy I detected you.' He is 'almost sure' that Payn wrote 'the article quoting Miss Mitford's letters' and challenges him: 'If I am right say so.' He continues: 'And if you ever are in London let me see you here at the Athenaeum at my house or wherever you like. We need all of us at times to see old friends. Since I saw you I have got on well in the world.' In 1854 through Cavour's influence Gallenga had been elected a deputy to the Italian parliament retaining his seat until 1864. He passed the summer in England and fulfilled his parliamentary duties at Turin in the winter. His employment as a Times correspondent begain during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859 and continued for twenty years. En folio mayor apaisado 345 x 480mm. 2 h. con portada y dedicatoria a Luis XIV de Francia grabadas 7 láminas grabadas sin numerar y 119 láminas grabadas y numeradas. Encuadernación en holandesa del siglo XIX. Primera edición de esta obra monumental dedicada a ilustrar el friso escultórico de la Columna Trajana erigida en Roma por orden del emperador Trajano en el año 113. Está ilustrada en bajo relieve en espiral y alcanza los 30 metros de altura compuesta por 18 enormes bloques de mármol de Carrara. El friso escultórico completo mide unos 200 m y da 23 veces la vuelta a la columna. El relieve narra dos victoriosas campañas de Trajano contra los dacios: en la mitad inferior de la columna se ilustra la primera 101-102 y en la superior la segunda 105-106. El relieve estuvo completamente policromado. Pietro Bartoli interesado en la reproducción de obras de arte antiguo reprodujo el friso completo de la columna y comisionó a Bellori y a Chacón para la escribir la historia que aparece al pie de los grabados. Identified in an unknown and as "Birds of a Feather" at bottom left of the page with the words and date "Modella 1882" penned by Bimboni at top right. The composer has signed and dated the quotation under the last line of music "Oreste Bimboni / Boston Hall / 1 May 1902". Near fine.</p><p>A RARE autograph.</p><p>The conductor and opera composer Oreste Bimboni 1846-1905 was with his nephew Alberto part of a long legacy of Florentine musicians. Both spent an extensive time abroad especially in the United States. As an opera conductor in Florence Oreste worked with some of the most significant singers of his time such as Adelina Patti and Emma Calve. He is first recorded as arriving in the United States in 1896. He moved to California in 1898 where he conducted opera. He moved back to the United States in 1902 after spending some time in Florence and taught at the New England Conservatory for three years before moving back to Europe.</p> Boston, Massachusetts, May 1, 1902.
