The story and backgrou nd of the massacre of Monte Sole is an overwhelming account of an outrage that has remained buried among the forgotten atrocities of World War II: the coldblooded murder by German soldiers of more tha n 1800 Italian civilians men women and children in the fall of 1944. Monte Sole ironically Mountain of the Sun had the bad luck to lie on the main route of withdrawal of the retreating German ar mies -- a route vitally important to Field Marshal Albert Kesselring. Under the fierce command of Il Lupo The Wolf the partisans of the Stella Rossa headquartered in the hills of Monte Sole haras sed the Germans by attacking convoys derailing trains even capturing the top-secret plans of the German Gothic Line. As the Allied advance stormed up Italy to the very shadow of Monte Sole Axis fru stration reached its peak. With full authorization of Kesselring and with an infusion of dread SS reinforcements the Germans deliberately set out to neutralize Monte Sole. Fine. Il Mulino, 1986 hardcover

199315034Cambridge University Press. 1993. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Very slight shelfwear to DJ else fine.; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity.; 0.63 x 8.82 x 5.67 Inches; 200 pages . 0521308828 .
