This is an about very good hardcover copy of a scarce trade catalog from the Venetian retailer, Francesco Brunello. The brown cloth leatherette covers are held together by cord. The back cover is mostly missing. The front cover has the company name and title in gilt script. Clean inside and out. Inside are 29 original photographs mounted to gray card stock leaves. All photographs bear a handstamp, either to the photograph or the margin of the leaf, with Francesco Brunello's name and adress in Venice. The first two photographs are different views of Brunello's showroom. The rest of the photographs are of individual pieces of furniture, in older Italian styles, very ornate, with elaborate veneer work and gilt mounts. Most photographs also have a tipped-on label of typed, or occasionally hand-written paper giving the model number and describing the piece, its' general style and materials. Most photographs with photographer information stamped on the back, also hand-written notes in Italian. No date on the catalog, but several photographs show electrical cords typical of the 1920's and 30's. Also the first two photographs show the sign in the showroom with Brunello's five digit telephone number. Large oblong folio, 10" high X 14" wide. This is a beautiful hardcover copy of this classic on the history of Italian garden design. Brown leather spine with raised bands and gilt titles. This is an ex-library copy in great condition. This work was originally published as a portfolio with loose plates, but this copy was bound with all text and plates on tabs, for easier use. The covers are marbled paper covered boards. Inside generally clean, but light soil, and a few perforated stamps on beginning blanks, and a few very small handstamps. Also shelf number on spine and paper label on front cover. 148 plates provide over 170 photographic views and details of the gardens. Also numerous drawings and illustrations in the text. Many of the most well-known villas and gardens in Italy are studied and illustrated here. Text in French. Elephant folio, 18" high X 14" wide. A beautiful book. The colophon has a wood engraved Giunti Fleur-de-lis and the text: In Fiorenza, Nella Stamperia di Cosimo Gionti. 1600. Con licenzia de'Superiori (very similar to the wording on the title page). Decorative initials in the text as well as typographic and wood engraved head and tail pieces. The engraved title is most unique, as it appears unfinished or a work in progress. It is meant to represent the promise of the youthful hero of the poems. Michelangelo is said to have prized this book. Some old worming and age stain, but generally good. Loose, in an early flexible vellum binding. On the engraved title is an old ownership stamp of the Bibliotheque Marseille; and a larger oval stamp in red indicating that the book was sold in 1845. Raffael Gualterotti (1543-1638) was, among other things, the chief astrologer at the Medici Court. A claim is made that he built a very early spyglass / telescope in 1590. RARE. SAFE ADD 1
This is a very good hardcover copy in the dark blue cloth covers with gilt titles and stool design on the front cover. Very clean inside and out but small light stains to lower margins of a few pages not affecting the plates. No date but usually said to be ca. 1930. Text in Italian. 320 black & white plates. Scarce standard reference for Italian furniture from Florence. 13" high X 10" wide, 78 text pages + plates. Very scarce in this condition, it feels hardly used. Later Blue Boards with Original Paper Wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 104 pages; 19 cm. In Hebrew with title page in Italian. Title translates to Form of the Prayers According to the Italian Custom. The customs and religious rites of the Italian-rite Jews can be seen as a bridge between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions, showing similarities to both; they are closer still to the customs of the Romaniotes (native Greek Jews) . A sub-division is recognised between minhag Bene Romi, practiced in Rome, and minhag Italiani, practised in northern cities such as Turin, though the two rites are generally close. In matters of religious law, Italian-rite Jews generally follow the same rules as the Sephardim, in that they accept the authority of Isaac Alfasi and the Shulchan Aruch as opposed to the Ashkenazi customs codified by Moses Isserles (the Rema) . However their liturgy is different from that of both of these groups. One reason for this may be that Italy was the main centre of early Jewish printing, enabling Italian Jews to preserve their own traditions when most other communities had to opt for a standard Sephardi or Ashkenazi prayer-book. It is often claimed that the Italian prayer-book contains the last remnants of the Judaean/Galilaean Jewish tradition, while both the Sephardi and, to a lesser extent, the Ashkenazi rites reflect the Babylonian tradition (Wikipedia 2017) .
