Considered one of the most significant pieces of literature from the Middle Ages and a seminal work of literature written in the French language. Also a milestone in historiography as the most important account of the first and second crusades and especially the latter for which William of Tyre was a contemporary witness. The author produced this work at the request of Almaric I in about 1170 and he continued to work on it until 1183. The work was indeed accepted as unquestioned fact for many centuries and only recently have biases been discerned owing from William's entanglement in the political disputes of the day. TM 796<p>MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT IN ITALIAN ON PAPER Northeastern Italy Veneto Venice c. 1474. Dimensions 328-332 x 230 mm. 188 folios missing at least three leaves written in brown ink in an Italian cursiva libraria script EIGHT ILLUMINATED INITIALS of seven lines one-line paraphs in red or blue<i> </i>simple two- to four-line in red or blue initials. BINDING: re-cased using original binding materials of brown half leather over bevelled wooden boards with three double bands remains of four straps present. TEXT: Italian translation of Gregory the Great's <i>Moralia in Job</i> one of the most important and widely copied texts of the Middle Ages. Though forty copies of this translation survive this volume is unusual in its incorporation of Venetian dialectal forms. All other copies are in European institutions and have not been on the market for the last century. PROVENANCE: scribal colophon on f. 190v provides a date for this manuscript's completion and helps localize its production within Italy: "Scripto per mi zuane de zane zoielier condam per simon et chi li lezeranno priegi dio per lo scriptore. MCCCCLXXIIII" Written by me Zuane de Zane jeweler once for Simon and may whoever will read it pray to God for the writer. 1474. There is no Zuane de Zane on record elsewhere as a scribe; the name itself is Venetian and evidence of the manuscript's watermark and decoration also suggest an origin in the region of Veneto and possibly Venice specifically. The manuscript was later acquired by a private European collection. CONDITION: slight tears in the lower margin of f. 25 and upper margin of ff. 37 and 160 from f. 161 to the end there is a slight loss to the upper outer corner<i> </i>slight water staining visible parchment reinforcement present prickings visible. Very Good Minus. 8vo. 23 by 15.5 cm. 65 pp. And unpaginated middle section 33 leaves with generally four photos per page that are each part of a moving image when the leaves are quickly flipped. In total eight separate moving images as the moving manipulation works when flipping forwards with the recto photos or backwards with the verso photos. All of these demonstrate diving and swimming technique. Thus with four different moving images vertically arranged we have a rather novel flip book. Glucker was a German author of other books on various subjects of physical fitness and this survey first appeared two years earlier in its original German. Condition: moderate wear to cover and age toning of pages. Sperling & Kupfer unknown

15855The inscription is dated 'Florence day of publication' the book being published in Florence in 1937. Only the prelims of the book are present on four leaves. In fair condition on aged paper with slight damage at the margin of the first leaf. Orioli's two inscriptions are on the two central leaves. Comprising a leaf with series title 'The Lungarno Series No. 12'; leaf with half-title and limitation no 5 of 300 on reverse signed 'G. Orioli'; title leaf; and contents leaf. The inscription on the title reads: 'This is for Barbara and Raphael with love and affection from Pino Orioli Florence day of publication'. The book is said to have been ghost-written by Douglas Orioli's English not being up to the task see 'Out of Print and into Profit' ed. G. Mandelbrote 2006. The inscription is dated 'Florence day of publication', the book being published in Florence in 1937. unknown
