1965100776
London December 21st 1965. 1965. Fine. - Over 220 words typed on 10 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide "The British Broadcasting Corporation" stationery. Writing as the Story Editor for the Drama Group Television David Benedictus tactfully rejects a script for "The Excursion" which was submitted to him. "Thank you for sending me the re-written version of 'The Excursion' which I have now read and considered. I am afraid that either I expected a type of play which was not the kind of play you were writing or else your have not succeeded in writing the play which I had hoped." He offers constructive criticism "the relationship between Ellen and Mac has not really deepened only extended." "There are other slight inconsistencies which bother me a little as for example if Ellen expected to go to the dinner mentioned in the start of the play and has as she said never stood anyone up why was it that she already had an appointment with Catherine and when was that made It seems unlikely too that Johnny Dankworth would be playing at a club where the band went home at 11:30 p.m. and which closed at midnight." He closes by wishing the recipient "will be able to place it elsewhere". Signed in full "David Benedictus" with a correction in red ink scratching out a word in his hand and the addition of a comma. Folded for mailing with an indentation from a paper clip to the top edge. Near fine.

Together with a previous typed letter signed by Margaret McLaren at Curtis Brown Ltd dated November 9th 1965 stating that David Benedictus had returned the "enclosed copy of THE EXCURSION."

The English writer and theatre director David Benedictus born 1938 is best known for his novels. His works include "Return to the Hundred Acre Wood" a Winnie-the-Pooh novel published in 2009 which was the first thus in 81 years. His first novel "The Fourth of June" was adapted for the stage. 17945One typed note 28 September 1948 on letterhead of Duff House Acacia Road London NW8 the other on letterhead of the Mermaid Theatre Blackfriars 16 November 1964. The autograph note without place or date. The two typed notes in good condition lightly aged; the autograph note in fair condition on aged paper. Two items signed 'Bernard Miles' and one 'B. M.' The first typed note suggests an exchange of material with the autograph postscript 'One or two of the appeals for charity are endorsed by H. I. Henry Irving himself.' The second typed note declines a collection: 'I managed to pick up an almost complete set in Leeds soon after we talked - nearly 200'. The autograph note simply acknowledges the sending of a cheque for a 'little lot of photographs I took away'. Also present is a carbon copy of one of Duncan's bills to Miles dated 27 March 1948. One typed note (28 September 1948) on letterhead of Duff House, Acacia Road, London, NW8, the other on letterhead of the Mermaid unknown
