This rare edition of the New Testament printed in 1794 at Boston for a consortium of booksellers aimed to provide a distinctly American printed Bible as an alternative to the British printings being imported and thus included the Great Seal of the United States prominently displayed on the title page. Thus suggesting that even at the dawn of the American republic certain clauses of the Bill of Rights were subject to fluid interpretation. This is an early appearance of the Great Seal of the United States and is the only instance where it was used in conjunction with a patently religious work. Copies are recorded at AAS and Duke. New Testament ONLY. 1 f. pp. 7891012; 19 plts. <br><br>Present here is the extracted New Testament from => the first folio Bible printed in America from the press of the printer whom Ben Franklin called the "Baskerville of America." Being also only the fourth complete Protestant Bible in English printed in the former British colonies its text is the standard King James version printed in double-column format in roman type; and Thomas's production is famous for its typography its achievement in size the pages are 15.5" tall and especially its illustrations. The plates 19 of them were engraved by four of America's greatest artisans: J. Norman Alexander Doolittle Joseph H. Seymour and Samuel Hill.<br>Â Â Â Â "An alphabetical table of proper names" was planned but not printed as indicated by the catchword on the final page; the table does appear in the quarto edition Thomas printed the same year. Old waterstaining from light to severe throughout extending across text and image areas of plates with very variable impact; age-toning occasional staining and off-setting from plates in only the usual degrees. Lower margins display some notable chips and purposeful paper tear-aways and a good many closed tears; only the latter reach sometimes into text without loss. Several plates have had closed tears neatly repaired from the rear; the plate of Mary Magdalen and the final leaf of the last Table show OLD replacement of paper where original paper was torn away from blank areas; the copy retains the old dog-earings and page-creasings of long use and bears pencillings on its final leaf. => A copy that has seen much happen to it over its more than 200 years of existence; still a sturdy interesting and imposing copy of this impressive early American New Testament. The Meretriciad which went through six editions within a few years celebrates in verse the charms of the famous English courtesan Kitty Fisher and some of her colleagues. Vertical crack in spine with shallow losses at crown and toe front binder's blank detached but present rear inner hinge cracking after free endsheet some wear to joints and forecorners; still a good internally fresh and crisp copy. An attractive octavo printing including the Apocrypha. Wright and Gill printed an edition in folio the same year. A highly likely association copy of some interest signed on the front binder's blank "Sarah S. Villiers 1804" probably Sarah Sophia Child-Villiers 1785-1867 Countess of Jersey and with the earlier signature of "Sarah Child 1779" her mother Sarah Anne Child 1764-1793. Sarah Childs married Lord Villiers on 23 May 1804. As heir to Child's Bank and to the property at Osterley Park she brought considerable resources to the marriage and was engaged as an active partner at the bank. She exerted influence in political circles and was prominent socially sufficient to provide models for fictional characters in novels by Disraeli and Lady Caroline Lamb. ESTC T91638. The 1763 edition of Baskerville's Bible has always been recognised as his masterpiece and is one of the high-points in the history of printing in Britain. This beautiful and monumental binding can be closely dated because Thomas Powys formerly MP for Northamptonshire was created Baron Lilford in 1797 and Staggemeier & Welcher are recorded in partnership on Villiers Street as of 1799. By 1810 Welcher was in business alone at that address. The Hon and Rev. Frederic Powys whose name appears on the spine was the third son of the first Lord Lilford; he married in 1807. Whether the binding was commissioned for his taking holy orders or on the occasion of his marriage can only be conjectured. A landmark of printing in a splendid binding. While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors" Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper" The History of the Oxford University Press 1975 I p. 171 In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works highly regarded for its large elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. Two distinct varieties occur. 17636390Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. Rebacked with original gold-tooled spine laid down. All edges gilt. Later reinforcements to joints and hinges. Light foxing on first and last leaves. Old bookplate on pastedown. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. For while being additionally the uncommon first printing in America of the Gospels in English in any translation other than the King James or the Douai-Rheims version this is also the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America.<br>Â Â Â Â George Campbell 171996 was a minister of the Church of Scotland theologian and principal of Marischal College. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Title-page and contents leaf with early inked inscriptions reading "Jas. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Campbell's translation of the Gospels were first printed in the U.S. in 1796 and was the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America. Fine copy. 4to recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel marbled paper boards gilt rules decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy dedicated to Joshua Reynolds a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface Petit Mot Pour Rire "a small joke" Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" "the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . ." and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House where it moved in 1780.
