Darlow and Moule suggest that this edition was actually printed in early 1633 as a number of copies are recorded as having their title-page dates altered by hand to read 1633 as is the case here.<br>Â Â Â Â The Apocrypha are present with the blank space on the last page of Malachi filled with an early inked "account of the several books in the Apocrypha." => The Psalter following the Bible includes music. The O.T. title-page is engraved and signed very faintly in this example by William here "Guilielmus" Hole and is framed by an elaborate architectural border displaying the coats of arms of the 12 tribes of Israel and portraits of the 12 Apostles. => The recto of the list of books is a full-page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden surrounded by animals. The New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1632 with an ornate wood-engraved border featuring Justice and Truth along with the British lion and unicorn and various architectural motifs.<br>Â Â Â Â The volume opens with two fly-leaves bearing genealogical records in several different early inked hands with dates ranging from 1743 through 1847. Both leaves are in excellent condition.<br>Â Â Â Â This book is very large and extremely heavy and will require considerable extra shipping charges. Vertical crack in spine with shallow losses at crown and toe front binder's blank detached but present rear inner hinge cracking after free endsheet some wear to joints and forecorners; still a good internally fresh and crisp copy. An attractive octavo printing including the Apocrypha. Wright and Gill printed an edition in folio the same year. A highly likely association copy of some interest signed on the front binder's blank "Sarah S. Villiers 1804" probably Sarah Sophia Child-Villiers 1785-1867 Countess of Jersey and with the earlier signature of "Sarah Child 1779" her mother Sarah Anne Child 1764-1793. Sarah Childs married Lord Villiers on 23 May 1804. As heir to Child's Bank and to the property at Osterley Park she brought considerable resources to the marriage and was engaged as an active partner at the bank. She exerted influence in political circles and was prominent socially sufficient to provide models for fictional characters in novels by Disraeli and Lady Caroline Lamb. ESTC T91638. The 1763 edition of Baskerville's Bible has always been recognised as his masterpiece and is one of the high-points in the history of printing in Britain. This beautiful and monumental binding can be closely dated because Thomas Powys formerly MP for Northamptonshire was created Baron Lilford in 1797 and Staggemeier & Welcher are recorded in partnership on Villiers Street as of 1799. By 1810 Welcher was in business alone at that address. The Hon and Rev. Frederic Powys whose name appears on the spine was the third son of the first Lord Lilford; he married in 1807. Whether the binding was commissioned for his taking holy orders or on the occasion of his marriage can only be conjectured. A landmark of printing in a splendid binding. While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors" Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper" The History of the Oxford University Press 1975 I p. 171 In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works highly regarded for its large elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. Two distinct varieties occur. This copy is Darlow & Moule's issue A with additional engraved general title page depicting Moses writing the first words of Genesis here bound as frontispiece; vignette view of Oxford on the general title page; and vignette title page for New Testament depicting the Annunciation dated 1716. The present example is noted for both its lovely contemporary black morocco gilt binding and for being ruled in red throughout. Bound before the Bible: An imperfect and defective copy of the Book of Common Prayer lacks all before quire B; and Speed's Genealogies stained throughout without the map of Canaan. Bound after the Bible: the 1615 edition of Herrey's Concordances last two leaves defective; and Sternhold & Hopkins' metrical psalms lacks title-page quite stained and frayed toward the end. 17636390Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. Rebacked with original gold-tooled spine laid down. All edges gilt. Later reinforcements to joints and hinges. Light foxing on first and last leaves. Old bookplate on pastedown. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless. § First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'†F.E. Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. In 1804 Carey first published a new edition of the quarto Bible from standing type and including the Apocrypha. A consummate promoter and bookseller Carey re-issued the Bible on a variety of paper stocks and with various numbers of engraved maps and plates over the next decade. An 1809 advertisement listed 34 variations of his "Family Bible" priced between $3.50 and $12 however none of those listed include more than 30 engraved maps and plates suggesting this issue with 50 engraved maps and plates and including the Old Testament New Testament Psalms Apocrypha and Brown's Concordance to be among the most deluxe version yet issued by Carey. We find no record of Carey's quarto bible with 50 plates as here.<br/><br/>With an early Morristown New Jersey bookseller stamp and provenance to the Mingle family of Warren County New Jersey. Cambridge: Pr. by John Archdeacon 1785. 8vo. 64 ff.<br>Â Â Â Â This striking 18th-century set owned by a wealthy Englishwoman who spent much of her life in Switzerland for more on which see below pairs a handsome Cambridge Bible and BCP in => masterfully designed and executed deluxe matched bindings. The Bible opens with a frontispiece engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; the Apocrypha are present in this copy and the New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1776. The BCP is bound with Companion to the Altar "Note This Book is bound up with the Common-Prayers of several sorts printed by the University of Cambridge" as per the title-page; Sternhold & Hopkins bring up the rear.<br>Â Â Â Â Bindings: Contemporary mottled green morocco covers framed in Greek key roll and dentelles composed of urn and flower motifs surrounding central JHS medallions with red morocco inlays and gilt-tooled flames; spines with gilt-tooled compartment decorations Bible spine with gilt-stamped red leather title-label. While the covers of the two volumes are strongly similar overall and "read" as => identical on first glance the details of the design vary slightly between the Bible and the BCP as the size disparity and possibly the time gap between the publication dates necessitated the use of different tools. The spine designs differ more notably but still most companionably with the Bible's spine decorations being built up with foliate and floral motifs and the BCP's with suns and stars. => To engage in minute comparison of these bindings' detail is an entrancing exercise.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper of Bible used for family record: Francis James Barwell de Sandol Roy born in 1793 and died in 1813 "Quel angoisse!"; Henri Guillaume de Sandol Roy born in 1797; and a list of grandchildren: François Sophie Anna and Alfred. The title-page inscription confirms that this set was owned by Sophie Bridget Barwell de Sandol Roy 17691850 daughter of William Barwell a director of the East India Company; her brother Richard became a famously wealthy and scandalous nabob. Dubbed "la belle Anglaise" following her arrival in Neuchâtel Sophie made a great splash in Swiss society and received a proposal from Colonel François Isaac de Sandol Roy sometimes given as Sandol-Roy a proposal which she at first rejected until he subsequently saved her from the guillotine in revolutionary Paris! BCP with a few instances of light foxing pages mostly clean; laid in is a stitched pamphlet which seems to be a record of additional family information involving Albert Victor and Mary although written in a challenging hand. => A gorgeous lavish production altogether with a remarkable arresting provenance. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. One plate in this copy "The Parting of Lot and Abraham" is bound in upside-down.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Title-page with inked inscription in upper margin: "Benjamin Morris to Samuel White Sept. 17th 1826" and with tipped-in typed slip noting presentation to a seminary by the Rev. Pages age-toned to browned with offsetting and foxing ranging from mild to moderate occasional spotting and smudging some dog-eared corners;some leaves with margins chipped or short edge tears a few with tears extending into text some with loss of a few letters. Two leaves in Jeremiah torn with upper portions lacking one leaf crudely repaired some time ago last leaf tattered; two final leaves last portion of tables section and the subscribers list lacking with scraps of the "Table of Kindred & Affinity" laid in. => Marked by time and use still an agreeable and interesting example of a noteworthy edition. The Bible Society of Philadelphia founded in 1808 with Bp. William White as its first president was the first Bible society organized in the United States. It published this the first stereotype Bible printed in the U.S. from plates imported from London; the B.F.B.S. contributed £500 towards the purchase of the plates and they were admitted to the U.S. free of import duties. The initial run produced 1050 copies of the complete Bible and 750 copies of the New Testament in double columns in very small type.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Signature of Edward H. Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br>Â Â Â Â This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books. Raised bands on spines; spine panels tooled and lettered in blind. Unusual and attractive. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Smith 209; Hills 2155 for the 1904 edition and explanation of reissues.
