The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop for fun Hills 69. "His purpose was to remove obsolete words and those offensive to delicacy" Rumball-Petre Webster himself further stipulating "To avoid giving offense to any denomination of christian sic I have not knowingly made any alteration to the passages of the present version on which the different denominations rely for the support of their peculiar tenets" Preface p. iv. Hinckley active as a wood engraver in Philadelphia between 1845 and 1857 see Dictionary of American Artists Yale 1975. English an editor and prolific author of poetry and prose composed the poem "Ben Bolt" and wrote a play entitled The Mormons. But he is perhaps best remembered for the fistfight that ended his friendship with Poe. This resulted from the public scandle revolving around letters sent to Poe by Elizabeth Ellett and Frances Sargent Osgood. "This association with Poe remains the chief source of scholarly interest in English. Their war of words figures as a major event in biographies of Poe and English's account of the poet have provided valuable information about Poe's sensitivity to alcohol and the possibility of his drug use" American National Biography.
