Brittanica.comThe present publication is the sole oration devoted to Lorenzo in the Short-Title List of Funeral Orations from the Italian Renaissance Ca. 1374-1534 compiled by John McManamon and the only printed example featured in the 1992 exhibition at the Bibliotheca Nazionale Centrale Lorenzo dopo Lorenzo La Fortuna Storica di Lorenzo il Magnifico. Notwithstanding the poor survival rate of ephemeral publications and the controversial character of the laudandus the statistic remains remarkable. The motive for the present oration was overwhelmingly political and meant to insure continuation of the traditionally strong alliance between Naples and Florence at a difficult time of dynastic transition. According to Miglio DBI X.369-70 the work was published before it was read.A Naples edition was published the same year from the press of Cristannus Preller IGI VI.1722-A. The work was re-published in the 19th century by Vito Capialbi in Memorie di R. Zeno e A. Bienato Naples 1838 49-86. Milanese born Aurelio Bienato was Reader in Rhetoric at the University of Naples 1470-80 and later elected Bishop of Martirano modern Catanzaro in which sinecure he remained until his death. Miglio also lists an unpublished commentary on Quintilian Iter Italicum I.415-16 II.570 and a collection of Latin verses Elegantiarum epithomata an epitome of Lorenzo Valla's Elegantiae linguae latinae which went through a number of incunable editions 1479/80; 1488; 1491. FIRST EDITION The work is attributed to Samuel Lorenzo Knapp 19 January 1783-8 July 1838 was a United States author and lawyer. and Benjamin Silliman 8 August 1779 -24 November 1864 and who was an American chemist one of the first American professors of science at Yale University and the first to distill petroleum. He was also famous for his attack on Republicanism Mary Wollstonecraft 27 April 1759 -10 September 1797 who was an 18th century British writer philosopher and advocate of women's rights. Silliman also wrote against William Godwin. Both Knapp & Silliman were prominent scholars and writers of the time and we believe that if they actually did write this book it was surely in the early years of their life. It is noteworthy that DNB does not cite this work for either of these authors nor for Wollstonecraft. She posed as a Hindu in this work! Regardless this illusive work is seldom found. Due to the poor quality of the paper copies when found are commonly foxed as is ours. Samuel Knapp wrote this monograph while an undergraduate at Dartmouth University. He discusses the very early concept of 'women's rights' which were almost non-existant at that time. Essentially an early study of Hindu poetry and the SONG OF SONGS. Sold "as is" in the foxed condition "with all faults" but complete otherwise. Not refundable so please inquire prior to purchase for more or better scans. The principle of economy in geometric constructionsFirst edition of Mascheroni's most important work with a dedication in verse to Napoleon in which he proves that any geometrical construction of Euclidean geometry can be carried out by means of compasses alone admitting that a straight line is constructed once two of its points have been defined thus demonstrating how a certain principle of economics in geometric constructions proclaimed by all the great mathematicians of the past from Pappus to Descartes was regularly and violated by the use of two tools where only one was enough.His approach was to first demonstrate how to use the compass alone to bisect a given arc of a circle add and subtract two given segments find the fourth proportional given three segments find the point of intersection of two given lines and the points of intersection between a given line and a circle.At this point Mascheroni theoretically demonstrated how all constructions completed with ruler and compass can be considered as a composition of the elementary operations defined above and therefore obtained using only the compass. In the spirit of the Enlightenment this work is not meant to be just theoretical but is also designed to facilitate the construction of precision instruments. Although some authors such as the Danish G. Mohr had sought before Mascheroni the solution of certain geometrical problems by using the compass alone he was able to deal with the subject of the geometry of the compass with such depth and in such a general way to make his forerunner forgotten.Lorenzo Mascheroni 1750 - 1800 was an Italian mathematician scholar and academic who since 1778 taught physics and mathematics at the Bergamo seminary.His most important contributions concern mathematical analysis with studies related to integral calculus and natural logarithms construction science with its original studies on arc-breaking calculus and geometry with the demonstration that solvable problems with row and compasses can also be solved with just the compass.His name is also linked to the Euler-Mascheroni constant of which he calculated the first 32 decimal digits. THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST TREATISES ON THAT PREDECESSOR TO OUR MODERN GAMES. In the game of calcio two teams each consisting usually of 27 men are engaged on an enclosed ground of 172 x 82 braccie fiorentine just little smaller than a modern football field. The action consists of carrying and kicking a pumped ball of medium size with fists and feet hence the name calcio in order to make it pass beyond the terminal barriers of the adversaries' half. One such successful action is called caccia. The team making the most caccie is the winner. Games typically last one hour and are played 'for honour's sake'. The wonderfully detailed description of the game is largely by Giovanni de' Bardi and though it was first published anonymously nearly a century earlier the text included here is greatly expanded and illustrated. It fully explains the rules and manners of the game and describes a number of games that had recently been played in and near Florence. The double-page plate depicts a match in the Piazza Santa Croce is very impressive and provides us with a lasting 17th century "instant replay" of the event.
