A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow's trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman and defended his right to have multiple "wives" as a matter of religious freedom. This copy with "From the Author" on the top margin of the title wrap apparently presented as a gift from Curtis. For the Author unknown books

"Stephens joined an Illinois company that left for California on March 28 1849. The company traveled to Fort Laramie South Pass Fort Bridger and Salt Lake City before veering off to the Southern Route and Death Valley. Surviving this ordal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River. Stephens spent time in the diggings along the Merced River and at the mining towns of Chinese Camp and Fine Gold Gulch. With the beginning of the rainy season in the fall of 1850 Stephens took up farming and freighting. Chemical Manipulations is intended as a manual for use in the laboratory and covers much ground containing a brief summary of the Principles of Chemistry and Chemical Analysis and part II contains the Special Analyses prescribed in the Programme of Instruction. Instruction in photography reviews various processes both theoretical and practical and contains useful "short examples" where there is a stated problem with printing for instance and possible reasons and solutions are presented. Complete as issued with 198 pp 79 lithographed plates 23 views 6 mammals 5 birds 21 reptiles 3 fish 21 botanical plates and large folding map. Original brown cloth with chipping and tears to spine cloth. Spine cracked at pp 174/175; intermittent foxing primarily affecting the title page occasional text margins and about 20 plates mainly mammals birds reptiles and botanicals as opposed to the views which are generally clean. Map has a few splits at the intersections and one closed tear that has been repaired on the verso. This was the final expedition made by the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers in connection with the Mexican War. In addition to Sitgreaves the expedition party included J.G. Parke Richard H. Kern as draughtsman S.W. Woodhouse as physician and naturalist and Antoine Leroux as guide. Its purpose was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado and to examine the territory en route. The party followed the Zuni from Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico to the Little Colorado then continued west reaching the Colorado near the Mojave villages and then proceeding south to Camp Yuma and San Diego. A valuable and entertaining book which Borromeo placed in his collection of "Novellieri" but which contains in reality narrative stories of people and events occurring between the mid-15th century and 1566; their names are listed in the index at the end. The events factual and anecdotal take place in Liguria Lombardy Campania and Aragon and several of them mention Turkey and the Turks. Small marginal tear to the outer edge of the inner wrappers and some wear to the corners of the wrappers; some light general soiling and light staining; in very good condition. 4 leaves of manuscript stitched together with the Synopsis into contemporary blue-green wrappers 7.63 x 5 inches this stitched into contemporary stiff gray wrappers titled in autograph ink "M. S. Lincoln April 4th 1839" 7 1 24 pages blanks completed in autograph ink. Illus. A relatively early and extensive phrenological reading from the hand of one of the great Fowler brothers himself; besides the descriptive analysis in manuscript the numerical measurements of the various traits are given in autograph ink in the margin of the printed pamphlet. Despite the Philadelphia Phrenological Athenaeum imprint to the printed chart the reading may likely have been delivered at the Fowler New York studio where Lorenzo had first established his business.
