1860395Delmonico Lorenzo. <i>Ball in Honor of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. New York October 12 1860. </i>New York: Delmonico's printed by Spear 1860. A menu printed on silk for a banquet given in honor of Albert Edward Prince of Wales later to be crowned King Edward VII called 'the event of the age' by the <i>Commercial Advertiser</i>. Held at New York's Academy of Music this ball required Lorenzo Delmonico to display all his culinary talents. Lorenzo Delmonico did not disappoint. "With pink and white drapery the rooms of the medical college had been transformed into exotic tents. On the buffet tables the magnificently presented dishes with their elegant-sounding French names were presented by Lorenzo Delmonico the owner of Manhattan's best restaurant." Printed on beige-colored silk with brown type this very fragile surviving menu measures 17 cm x 11 cm having been trimmed slightly from its original size. Lyon edition of Lorenzo Vallas linguistic work on the Latin language. This same year an edition appeared with Jodus Badius Ascensius and was printed in Paris with Simonem Colinaeum. The next year 1536 saw editions from the printers Giunta in Lyon and Fabricius in Cologne. Immensely popular as a textbook this was Vallas widely reprinted and influential work on Latin linguistics which went through at least 60 editions between 1471 and 1536. Lorenzo or Laurentius Valla from Piacenza was a scholar humanist and philosopher not unfamiliar with controversy. In his tumultuous career he was chosen by Pope Nicholas V to translate the classical texts of Herodotus and Thucydides into Latin. His masterwork is De lingvae latinae elegantia 1444 called a brilliant philological defense of classical Latin in which he contrasted the elegance of the ancient Romans works - especially those of Cicero and Quintilian - with the clumsiness of medieval and Church Latin Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia 6th ed. 2006. Vallas treatise was novel in it subjected the forms of Latin grammar and the rules of Latin style and rhetoric to a critical examination. His work was the basis for the Humanist movement to reform the style of Latin prose to a more classical and Ciceronian direction and on a scientific basis and away from the Christian Latin of the European Middle Ages. This was thought to be a major improvement in style and elegance in Latin usage. Sebastian Gryphius was a German bookseller-printer and humanist. Around 1520 he came to Lyon and settled there on behalf of a Venetian firm of booksellers. Initially Gryphius largely published works on law but was later known for classic works in humanism produced in elegant format. 18267538Mexico City: Mariano Galvez Rivera 1826. First edition. Quarto size pp 8 276 8. A history of Texcoco a city built by the Acolhuas a pre-Columbian people of the Náhuatl-speaking group of tribes and once the chief seat of Aztec culture. There is much information on the legendary past and particularly the great king of Texcoco Netzahualcoyotl. It appears that the text is basically that of Veytia based on notes and other material of Boturini with some editorial additions by Bustamante. Boturini 1702-51 educated in Milan and Vienna arrived in Mexico in 1736. Fired with the intention of writing a history of pre-Conquest Mexico he assembled a collection of mss in Náhuatl and Spanish now principally preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris which has never been equalled. Returning to Europe in 1744 Boturini worked on his Idea de una nueva historia general de la América Septentrional fundada sobre material copioso de figuras symbolos caracterer y jeroglÃficos cantares y manuscritos de autores indios ultimamente descubiertos Madrid 1746 which is an inventory of pictorial texts of Spanish-Indian history. In that work he was assisted by Mariano Fernández de EcheverrÃa y Veytia. Veytia 1718 - 80 a native of Puebla was one of the great historians of pre-conquest Mexico of his day along with Clavigero and wrote on that subject as well as a history of his "querida" Puebla. He was a close friend of Boturini whose work in Mexico inspired his own studies. Carlos MarÃa de Bustamante 1774-1848 Mexican patriot politician journalist and pamphleteer was one of the intellectuals of the Insurrection movement. As well as recovering pre-Columbian and colonial mss Bustamante produced a number of historical works the most important of which is his Cuadro histórico de la revolución de la América mexicana 1823-32 which covers the period 1808-21. Ownership inscription on title-page: "Mexico 28 May 1834 J. H. Fritsch". Sabin 6835: Palau 33791. Some copies apparently have a folded map of the lake Texcoco - this copy does not and follows Palau's and Sabin's collation in that respect: further no plates or maps are called for in the index and no copies at auction indicate a map or plates. This is the most famous 19th c. work on Central America and a very important regional history by an anti-clerical and liberal historian Lorenzo Montufar y Rivera Maestre 1823-1898 who as foreign minister of Costa Rica helped organize the Central American defense against William Walker and was frequently exiled for his opposition to the dictator Rafael Carrera. Bancroft and many other historians relied very heavily on Montufar's work and thus his subsequent influence on both English and Spanish language histories has been quite substantial. Schorsch on the front pastedown. <br/><br/>Scarce first edition of Lorenzo Gambaras devotional treatise the Rerum sacrarum liber published by Plantin in Antwerp in 1577. Plentiful in sacred iconography Gambaras book was known for its beautiful art history images depicting classic Christological scenes visions saints and parables all after the drawings of Bernadino Passeri. Lorenzo Gambara born in Brescia studied arts and letters at the University of Padua. While he was still young he moved to Rome where he was linked to the papal court and was in service to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and later Pope Gregory XIII. Virtually Gambaras entire life had been encompassed by the culture of the papal court a place where he also made his name as a poet. One of Gambaras major driving beliefs was that the popular myths in ancient poetry had pagan roots. Wanting to write something to counteract the celebration of depraved literature in his time Gambara wrote this treatise to discourage Christian poets from using pagan symbols in their work. This marvelous work contains descriptions of experiments on air-pressure freezing of water an early account of Torricelli's invention of the barometer thermometer electrical and magnetic experiments measurements of the velocity of sound and light and experiments on heat and cold. It contains many large full-page engravings of experimental apparatus used to conduct these early experiments in natural physics. The engravings on pages iii vi viii and xiii show Torricelli's thermometer with a column of liquid and capsules of various density liquids that will either float of sink depending upon the surrounding temperature. Also known as a "termometro lento" slow thermometer this clever instrument is still marketed as a functioning curiosity today. / As the mechanism of the atmosphere exerting continuous pressure on the surface of the earth was unknown at that time the experiments using a barometer and bell jar pp. xxiv-xxxi seem rather naïve to us today. The members of the Academy couldn't determine why the mercury in the column didn't fall once the barometer was 'shielded' from the surrounding atmosphere. What they failed to realize is that the air pressure inside the bell jar remained the same as the outside since it had not been evacuated. Page lxxxxix depicts a curious experiment in which an organ pipe and a bellows to blow air through a pipe are encased in a vacuum chamber. The experiment demonstrated that when the chamber was evacuated the pipe no longer made sound even though the bellows were still forcing 'air' through the apparatus therefore showing that air at normal pressure was a necessary component to produce sound. / The Academy of Experiments was founded in Florence in 1657 and flourished for only ten years 1657-1667 and presents the first group effort at scientific investigation on the part of scientists including such original minds as Viviani Borelli Steno Redi Cassini and Torricelli. Its moving spirits were two of Galileo's most distinguished disciples Viviani and Torricelli. The necessary financial support came from the two Medicis the Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany and his brother Leopold; both of them had studied under Galilei. A subscription form for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company which sought to attract colonists to land granted to Lorenzo de Zavala Joseph Vehlein and David G. Burnet in southeast Texas in the early 1830s. The present form is completed for one of the principal land owners in the scheme Lorenzo de Zavala and is signed by him on the verso. Zavala went on to play a major role in the Texas Revolution and became the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas. "The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York on October 16 1830 for the purpose of colonizing the lands assigned to the empresarios Joseph Vehlein David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala. The colonization contracts covered an area in East Texas lying east of the San Jacinto River and south of a line running twenty leagues north of Nacogdoches 3743163 acres. The company a real-estate promotion firm with agents land counselors surveyors and salesmen did not own land itself but sold scrip that allowed the settlers simply to move into the area allotted to the three empresarios. There the settlers had to complete all requirements of the Mexican colonization law before they could obtain title to land" - Texas State Handbook Online. "The certificate lists by date the four grants there were two grants to Vehlein to the three empresarios and gives the boundaries of the resulting tract. 17464811Madrid: Zuniga 1746. 1st edition. Quarto 23 leaves 168 pp; 4 leaves 96 pp. Both of the superb copper-engraved frontispieces are present. Boturini an Italian who came to Mexico in 1736 from Spain and became enamored of the cult of the Virigin of Guadalupe. He became a hermit on the hill of Tepeyac for a time and also conceived the idea of writing a history of the pre-conquest indians of Mexico. He was fluent in Najuatl travelling around and collecting an amazing coll ection of early and original indian material for a number of years. This excited the suspicion of the Viceroy who had him arrested and sent to the Inquisition in Spain for imprisonment. His ship was captured by English pirates but he was finally put ashore at Gibraltar. His priceless collection was confiscated and dispersed over many years. He was exonerated in Spain and even honored by an official post as Historian of the Indies but never was able to get possession of his collection. This is a very nice copy clean and crisp; the binding looks to be Mexican early 19th century half red leather with decorative flourishes on the spine over black pebbled boards. <br/><br/> Zuniga hardcover books

The first bilingual edition of Pinckney's Treaty of San Lorenzo which ended the West Florida Conflict by establishing an amicable agreement between Spain and the United States for the navigation of the Mississippi River. Thomas Pinckney signed as a representative of the United States and Manuel de Godoy signed in the name of Carlos IV of Spain. The agreement's effects were far reaching as the ceded land that became the Mississippi Territory - particularly the Natchez region - formed a gateway for the United States expansion into the Southwest by destabilizing Spanish power. A landmark treaty uncommon in its first bilingual edition. Rear wrap and final leaf detached and lacking the passports. Few annotations in margins mainly on poem for St. Anthony of Padua beginning p. 183. <br/><br/>Gambaras rare neo-Latin treatise discouraging Christian poets from using pagan symbols the Liber Rerum Sacrarum finely illustrated by Passeri and from the Plantin press in 1577. Rare original edition of Lorenzo Gambaras Liber Rerum Sacrarum a collection of Latin religious poems in which he dissuades Christian poets from using pagan mythology in their work. Gambara was born in Brescia in 1506 but spent most of his life in Rome in service to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and Pope Gregory XIII where he had regular contact with many writers of the day. He himself was a prolific poet and translator of Greek lyric poetry perhaps better known for his work on the Navigation of Christopher Columbus 1581. Gambara died in 1596 at the age of 90. Each of Gambaras poems in the Liber Rerum Sacrarum feature saints or religious feasts which were dedicated to a prominent prelate starting with a brief argumentum or appeal and with an illustration adapted to the text. As pointed out in letters by Plantin the plates were made in Italy by an unknown engraver probably after the designs of the Roman painter Bernardino Passeri whose name figures on the title page and shipped to Antwerp. This is the first edition of this illustrated encyclopaedia of the duties of rural and urban servants in the ancient world. This covers the family life and legal status of a wide range of tradesmen and blue collar workers: gladiators scribes bookkeepers musicians physicians and surgeons comedians artisans tutors gardeners cooks midwives teachers and fishermen. There are plates of musical instruments ball players ships jewelry and a wine cellar. The text draws on ancient medieval and contemporary sources. The distinguished doctor Fabricus ab Aquapendente contributed a short essay on food addressed to the Augusburg merchant and historian Marcus Welser. A learned antiquary born in Padua in 1591 Pignoria was educated by the Jesuits and a canonry of Treviso was conferred upon him by cardinal Fr. Barberini. This present work is called "a valuable work" although criticised as being diffuse. This offers an interesting glimpse into the working of the classical household. [C. Collation: 16 576 70 p. engraved frontispiece and 36 woodblock prints in text or singly. The frontispiece has allegorical figures in a garden with arms of the University of Bologna. Bottom of spine repaired with new vellum. The internal condition is very good. This is a very scarce title from an Italian botanist and brother of naturalist Batolomeo Ambrosini. He succeeded his brother to the chair of botany at the University of Bolognia and also assumed direction of the botanical garden. His first work was Hortus Bononia studiosirum consistus which was followed posthumously with the Phytologiae offered here. The Phytologiae was intended to be the first of a two-volume dictionary of plants with the second to be on trees. The second volume was never completed. The woodcuts in this work on herbaceous plants were done by Tinti and provide a good working illustration for the plant described in the text. This very scarce work comes from a period of great botanical study and characterization in Italy. The genus Ambrosinia is named after the two brothers.
