Acquaforte misure: mm 192 × 141 Pittore ed incisore allievo di Guido Reni e di Giovanni Andrea Sirani dai quali spesso ha desunto i soggetti delle sue incisioni. Più noto come incisore che come pittore segue i modi classicisti del maestro Guido Reni adottando un segno chiaro e sciolto; è oggi considerato uno dei protagonisti del panorama grafico bolognese di pieno Seicento; a lui vengono ricondotte venticinque lastre in tutto secondo Bartsch nelle quali si evince qualche incertezza nelle morsure. Il soggetto di questa incisione deriva da un’idea di Giovanni Andrea Sirani (Bologna 1610 – Bologna 1670). Sotto una tenda drappeggiata e aperta, che ci permette di osservare un muro sullo sfondo, vediamo tre putti. Il primo sulla sinistra a fatica sorregge uno stemma con incisa la dedica da Vittorio Serena (?) al Signor Filippo Guastavillani, notabile della città di Bologna poi cardinale dal 1574. Il secondo è dietro lo stemma che guarda un punto in lontananza e a destra troviamo l'ultimo con le ali dispiegate, arco e frecce, che guarda lo spettatore e indirizza attraverso la mano destra il suo sguardo. In basso a sinistra "G.A. Sirano In.", a destra "L.LL. F." Impressione eccellente nello stato unico. Foglio rifilato lungo l’impronta del rame, carta ingiallita. L’incisione si presenta applicata in antico su una pagina di album (databile al secolo XVIII). Small marginal tear to the outer edge of the inner wrappers and some wear to the corners of the wrappers; some light general soiling and light staining; in very good condition. 4 leaves of manuscript stitched together with the Synopsis into contemporary blue-green wrappers 7.63 x 5 inches this stitched into contemporary stiff gray wrappers titled in autograph ink "M. S. Lincoln April 4th 1839" 7 1 24 pages blanks completed in autograph ink. Illus. A relatively early and extensive phrenological reading from the hand of one of the great Fowler brothers himself; besides the descriptive analysis in manuscript the numerical measurements of the various traits are given in autograph ink in the margin of the printed pamphlet. Despite the Philadelphia Phrenological Athenaeum imprint to the printed chart the reading may likely have been delivered at the Fowler New York studio where Lorenzo had first established his business.
