'Senate Documents' and eagle blind stamped on boards. The spine and the surrounding areas of the boards are sunned gilt no longer bright on the backstrip. A contemporary owner's name has been rubbed out on the front pastedown exposing a small area of the underlying boards. The majority of the pages are remarkably bright. Complete. No bird plate 2 as is called for in Wright Howes. The large folding map is present with an approximately 7" closed tear and occasional small splits to the folds. As is pointed out in "Wagner/Camp" "Wheat. highly praises the map calling it a 'monumental achievement. generally correct and. exceedingly well done.'" 33d Congress. 1st Session. The announced purpose of Sitgreaves' expedition was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado and to examine the territory en route. The company traveled to Fort Laramie South Pass Fort Bridger and Salt Lake City before veering off to the Southern Route and Death Valley. Surviving this ordeal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River.With the beginning of the rainy season in the fall of 1850 Stephens took up farming and freighting.
