"Stephens joined an Illinois company that left for California on March 28 1849. The company traveled to Fort Laramie South Pass Fort Bridger and Salt Lake City before veering off to the Southern Route and Death Valley. Surviving this ordal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River. Stephens spent time in the diggings along the Merced River and at the mining towns of Chinese Camp and Fine Gold Gulch. With the beginning of the rainy season in the fall of 1850 Stephens took up farming and freighting. A menu printed on silk for a banquet given in honor of Albert Edward Prince of Wales later to be crowned King Edward VII called 'the event of the age' by the <i>Commercial Advertiser</i>. Held at New York's Academy of Music this ball required Lorenzo Delmonico to display all his culinary talents. Lorenzo Delmonico did not disappoint. "With pink and white drapery the rooms of the medical college had been transformed into exotic tents. On the buffet tables the magnificently presented dishes with their elegant-sounding French names were presented by Lorenzo Delmonico the owner of Manhattan's best restaurant." Printed on beige-colored silk with brown type this very fragile surviving menu measures 17 cm x 11 cm having been trimmed slightly from its original size. Kerr" joker the pseudonym originally used by Lawrence Block for his 1969 titular novel but the novel was released as written by Paul Kavanagh the lead character of the script and another pseudonym of Block's. <br/><br/>Based on the 1969 heist novel by Lawrence Block about a burnt-out former Green Beret who gets a tip-off about a valuable shipment of tactical nuclear weapons which he intends to steal with the help of a trained killer. Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr. was known for his action and thriller films including "Daddy's Gone A-Hunting" 1969 "Papillon" 1973 and "Never Say Never Again" 1983.<br/><br/>Printed blue titled wrappers with an address label from the Paul Kohner agency in Hollywood on the front wrapper with credits for screenwriter Semple and novelist Kerr Block.
