Sitgreaves and his party traversed the country from northern New Mexico to San Diego in the summer and fall of 1851 crossing northern Arizona and descending the Colorado to Yuma before crossing the desert. This report is notable for its many lithographed plates of scenes along the route as well as flora and fauna. The natural history specimens are described by John Torrey. Sherwood and his National Cheap Freight Railway League seek "to lessen the cost of transportation" by breaking up "the monopoly system" and pattern of "exclusive privilege" that have oppressed small business and farmers and by opening the railway network "to free competition in transportation." They also support government subsidies for "a railroad to unite the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile and Pensacola with the lakes at Cleveland and Chicago." The League's membership roster which includes many members of Congress is printed. The pamphlet includes a Letter from the League to the organizers of a mass meeting of the 'Cheap-Freight Railway League' in Houston and prints various endorsements of the League's goals. Fine condition.<br/><br/> American politician from Virginia who also served as an officer fighting for the Confederate States of America. During the Civil War Pridemore raised a company of Volunteer Infantry for the Pound Gap Battalion of the Confederate Army and was commissioned as its Captain on October 17th 1861. In June 1862 he received a promotion of Major. Following reorganization after the Battle of Cumberland Gap his unit was reconstituted as Company S of the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry under Colonel Campbell Slemp and Pridemore became a Lieutenant Colonel on December 14th 1862. He was promoted to full Colonel in 1864 and commanded the 64th Virginia Cavalry until the end of the war.<br/><br/> unknown books

The first bilingual edition of Pinckney's Treaty of San Lorenzo which ended the West Florida Conflict by establishing an amicable agreement between Spain and the United States for the navigation of the Mississippi River. Thomas Pinckney signed as a representative of the United States and Manuel de Godoy signed in the name of Carlos IV of Spain. The agreement's effects were far reaching as the ceded land that became the Mississippi Territory - particularly the Natchez region - formed a gateway for the United States expansion into the Southwest by destabilizing Spanish power. A landmark treaty uncommon in its first bilingual edition. Rear wrap and final leaf detached and lacking the passports. This is the first edition of this illustrated encyclopaedia of the duties of rural and urban servants in the ancient world. This covers the family life and legal status of a wide range of tradesmen and blue collar workers: gladiators scribes bookkeepers musicians physicians and surgeons comedians artisans tutors gardeners cooks midwives teachers and fishermen. There are plates of musical instruments ball players ships jewelry and a wine cellar. The text draws on ancient medieval and contemporary sources. The distinguished doctor Fabricus ab Aquapendente contributed a short essay on food addressed to the Augusburg merchant and historian Marcus Welser. A learned antiquary born in Padua in 1591 Pignoria was educated by the Jesuits and a canonry of Treviso was conferred upon him by cardinal Fr. Barberini. This present work is called "a valuable work" although criticised as being diffuse. This offers an interesting glimpse into the working of the classical household. [C. S. Lincoln April 4th 1839" 7 1 24 pages blanks completed in autograph ink. Illus. A relatively early and extensive phrenological reading from the hand of one of the great Fowler brothers himself; besides the descriptive analysis in manuscript the numerical measurements of the various traits are given in autograph ink in the margin of the printed pamphlet. Despite the Philadelphia Phrenological Athenaeum imprint to the printed chart the reading may likely have been delivered at the Fowler New York studio where Lorenzo had first established his business.
