An original French collection of the moral tales and short fables by the French historian Jean-Francois Marmontel illustrated with one detailed plate to each volume. Complete in four volumes. In the original French. Collated complete. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I and one plate each bound into Volumes II III and IV. Half-title is present to each volume. Registers run as: Volume I 4 A-T8 Volume II A-T8 V4 Volume III A-T8 V4 Volume IV 2 A-R8 S9. A collection of the tales of Jean-Francois Marmontel. Marmontel published this series of moral tales in the official journal 'Le Mercure'. The tales are moral but also have a delicate finish to their writing style and depict the court of Louis XV at Versailles in a charming and graphic manner. They are sentimental stories and were very widely appreciated and popular with the public. Marmontel was a French historian and author. He was a member of the Enclycolpedistes movement and first found literary success with a succession of tragedies that he wrote from 1748 to 1753 including 'Aristomene' and 'Cleopatre'. In a full marbled calf binding. Externally generally smart. Rubbing to the boards and spines with some loss of leather to the front boards of Volumes I and II. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities with a small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume II. A small amount of loss to the spine label to Volume II. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark and odd spot. Prior owner's ink inscription 'A. Baird' to the head of the title pages of Volumes I and II to the head of the half-titles of Volumes III and IV to the head of page 45 of Volume I head of leaves C6 and E1 of Volume II head of leaf C7 of Volume III and head of leaf C7 of Volume IV. Small closed tear to the tail of leaf H7 of Volume I not affecting text and mark to leaf L6. Small chip to leaf O1 of Volume II not affecting text. Very Good J. B. Garnery hardcover

FICTIONAL ACCOUNT OF PERU 1817 - UNRECORDED EDITION. Les incas ou la destruction de l'empire du Perou

18173616Paris: Guillaume et Companie Libraire rue Hautefeuille no. 14 1817. Good. 2 vols. small 12mo. 233 3; 250 4 pp. With 2 engraved frontispieces. Contemporary French mottled sheep extremities worn and bumped; back cover of vol. 2 abraided with loss leather on front hinge quite worn but the board is quite attached marbled pastedowns and endpapers all edges marbled. Text with minor foxing but completely unmarked and unspoiled. NOT ex-library! No copy of this edition has been located despite extensive searching. KVK and FirstSearch list a digital surrogate only but the link wrongly points to a completely different edition Ledentu which consists of 288 332 pages. The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated. The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers: "'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century."
