Notes on the verso of the last page in pencil in French indicate that this copy belonged to pianist Antoine François Marmontel and suggest that the fingerings may be in his hand. Translated from the French: "This copy belonged to Marmontel judging by the dedications of the pieces bound in the same volume. Perhaps the notes in pencil are from Marmontel." Grabowski & Rink 11-1-Sm. A historic copy having been owned by two of the most important pianists in history. <br style="">Pianist teacher and musicologist Antoine François Marmontel became Professor of Keyboard at the Paris Conservatory in 1848 succeeding Pierre Zimmermann and beating out his former teacher Charles-Valentin Alkan. He achieved renown as a pedagogue; among his many notable students were Georges Bizet Vincent D'Indy and Claude Debussy. Marmontel was the author of a large number of pedagogical works as well as musicological works which are among the best sources for the history of the piano and pianists.<br style="">One of the 20th century's most influential — yet inimitable — classical figures Alfred Cortot was born in 1877 in Switzerland to a French father and a Swiss mother and he based his long career as a pianist conductor and teacher in Paris. Cortot was one of his era's most renowned interpreters of Chopin his best recordings setting an enduring standard for poetry in motion. In 1925 the pianist made the first electrical recording of classical music for the Victor label in New Jersey featuring music by Chopin and Schumann. Among his hundreds of subsequent recordings was the first complete version of Chopin's Preludes Op. 28. In holding up Cortot as a paragon of Chopin playing even decades after his death The New York Times described his method as combining "lucidity with spontaneity. It is almost modern in its lack of sentimentality and attention to structure; yet it is unmistakably Romantic in its insistence on freedom and variety. Each line is suffused with subtle detail with interior contours and dynamic shadings. But these are not indulgent ornaments; they reveal rather than cloud the music's intentions." <br style=""><br style="">The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor Op. 11 was composed in 1830 when Chopin was twenty years old and was first performed on 11 October of that year at the Teatr Narodowy the National Theatre in Warsaw Poland with the composer as soloist during one of his "farewell" concerts before leaving Poland. The first of Chopin's two piano concertos to be published it was therefore given the designation of Piano Concerto "No. 1" at the time of publication even though it was actually written immediately after the premiere of what was later published as Piano Concerto No. 2. Contemporary French mottled sheep extremities worn and bumped; back cover of vol. 2 abraided with loss leather on front hinge quite worn but the board is quite attached marbled pastedowns and endpapers all edges marbled. Text with minor foxing but completely unmarked and unspoiled. NOT ex-library! No copy of this edition has been located despite extensive searching. KVK and FirstSearch list a digital surrogate only but the link wrongly points to a completely different edition Ledentu which consists of 288 332 pages. The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated. <br /> <br /> The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers:<br /> <br /> "'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century." An original French collection of the moral tales and short fables by the French historian Jean-Francois Marmontel illustrated with one detailed plate to each volume. Complete in four volumes. In the original French. Collated complete. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I and one plate each bound into Volumes II III and IV. Half-title is present to each volume. Registers run as: Volume I 4 A-T8 Volume II A-T8 V4 Volume III A-T8 V4 Volume IV 2 A-R8 S9. A collection of the tales of Jean-Francois Marmontel. Marmontel published this series of moral tales in the official journal 'Le Mercure'. The tales are moral but also have a delicate finish to their writing style and depict the court of Louis XV at Versailles in a charming and graphic manner. They are sentimental stories and were very widely appreciated and popular with the public. Marmontel was a French historian and author. He was a member of the Enclycolpedistes movement and first found literary success with a succession of tragedies that he wrote from 1748 to 1753 including 'Aristomene' and 'Cleopatre'. In a full marbled calf binding. Externally generally smart. Rubbing to the boards and spines with some loss of leather to the front boards of Volumes I and II. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities with a small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume II. A small amount of loss to the spine label to Volume II. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark and odd spot. Prior owner's ink inscription 'A. Baird' to the head of the title pages of Volumes I and II to the head of the half-titles of Volumes III and IV to the head of page 45 of Volume I head of leaves C6 and E1 of Volume II head of leaf C7 of Volume III and head of leaf C7 of Volume IV. The sixth edition of this work which was first issued in 1777. Jean-Francois Marmontel was a member of the Encyclopedistes movement. He wrote many articles for the movement. Marmontel gained patronage of Madame de Pompadour which enabled him to take a place of the official journal 'Le Mercure'. This work traces the cruelties in Spanish America and discusses the effect of the invader's religious fanaticism on the native people. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and two plates. Contemporary inscription to the verso of front endpaper in French for a prize in French language from Temple Grove East Sheen awarded to 'Erlysman Pinkney' and dated December 1851. A bright copy of this novel by a prolific author remembered for his contributions to the 'Encyclopedistes' movement. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally smart with several light marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots mostly to the first and last few pages.
