NB: this half-sheet is original and does not represent an excision as can been seen from the old offsetting of the final page of text. Overall in very good condition. AN EARLY AMERICAN PRINTING OF A WORK OF FICTION; OUR COPY WAS OWNED BY A YOUNG WOMAN OR WOMAN BY AT LEAST 1803. THIS NEWBURYPORT EDITION OF THE NOVEL IS UNCOMMON. <br /> <br /> At a time when women were denied the rights of citizenship the text of Marmontel's "Belisarius" was of particular interest to some contemporary feminist authors and activists some of whom utilized its plots to champion human rights as is attested by the 1795 New York play written by Margaretta Faugeres entitled "Belisarius: A Tragedy." <br /> <br /> The first blank leaf is inscribed "Eliza Gage 1803." This may have been Eliza Gage of Newburyport who was born in 1790 to Jonathan Gage and Susanna Jewett. <br /> <br /> The present translation follows that of the bilingual text given in the Brussels 1792 edition although no Translator's Preface appears therein. However there is one in the present edition and it seems to have been written by an American. The final sentence reads: "What will still raise your surprise to a great height is to find an author possessed of so strong a sense of liberty born under the French government: he has been since sent to the Bastile as a reward for his most excellent performance." <br /> <br /> A copy of this Newburyport edition was listed among the fiction books in the Caritat Circulating Library in 1804 for which see G.G.

Marmontel condemned the violence against the native Americans indigenous people. This plea was not suited in the time of the French monarchy during the ancien regime based on intolerance and intimidation. The archbishop of Paris Mgr. Chrisophe de Beaumont banned the work of Marmontel in 1767. Also in The Netherlands there was a vivid dispute this time on the idea that also non-christians heidenen could join in heaven. This is called the ""Socratische oorlog"".Jean Francois Marmontel 1723-1799 was a French historian writer and member of the Encyclopedistes movement. In 1772 he became the official historian of France historiographe de France. He worked with Alembert Helvétius d'Holbach Condillac Turgot Buffon Condorcet and Voltaire. The book was reprinted in 1787 by the Bibliotheque amusante.Boekverboden - forbidden books - banned book - omstreden schrijver - tegenstander van Rousseau - pleidooi voor religieuze tolerantie - plea for religious tolerance unknown

1773LTH28-D-19London: P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. An attractive copy of Jean-Francois Marmontel historical work on the life and times of the Byzantine military leader Belisarius. Translated into English from the original French. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lycée in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambré Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown.Entitled 'Belisaire' in the original French the work was incredibly controversial. The work made bold comparisons between Belisarius' decline into poverty at the hand of his king Justinian I and the then current French monarch Louis XV and his treatment of his people. Furthermore the French ecclesiastical authorities were angered by the works perpetuation of the the virtues of religious tolerance. These factors resulted in the work being banned in France. Not only a interesting history of this Byzantine military leader this work is also valuable as it touches upon the political climate of 18th century France. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Very Good Indeed P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover
