With an important association to the movement of naturalism. From the library of Lucien Descaves. A large paper copy of this fiftieth anniversary edition with an preface by Leon Hennique. Signed by the publisher Fasquelle to the edition page. This special edition was signed for the French novelist Lucien Descaves. Signed to the verso of title page to Monsieur Lucien Descaves from Fasquelle. Descaves was one of the "Manifeste des Cinq' authors who following the initial publication of this work accused Zola of having deserted the naturalist camp abandoning his troops and betraying his own oeuvre Whidden Seth p.108. In French. Loosely inserted is an inscribed note by the hand of Descaves in French. The note regards the 'Evenings of Medan' lunch hosted on May 3 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this work. A menu card for the event is also inserted. A portrait of Charles Del Fosse is loosely inserted. With a portrait frontispiece of all six contributors. Paul Alexis has signed above his image. This work contains tales of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and some critics explain also tells the tale of the campaign of naturalism. It is considered by some to be a manifesto of naturalism. This work was important as a means to promote and defend naturalism by presenting a united front. There are five contributors in addition to Emile Zola: J.K Huysmans Henry Ceard Leon Hennique Paul Alexis Maupassant and Paul Alexis. The six authors are often referred to as the 'Medan Group'. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally very smart. A few light marks to the wraps. Internally binding is tender in places due to the binding type. Pages are bright.
