Troisième roman de Maupassant Mont-Oriol parut d’abord en feuilleton dans Gil Blas du 23 décembre 1886 au 6 février 1887 avant d’être publié la même année chez Victor-Havard. Maupassant y transporte le roman d’amour dans le décor très contemporain d’une ville d’eaux auvergnate inspirée de Châtel-Guyon où il avait séjourné à plusieurs reprises comme curiste à partir de 1883. Sous les apparences d’une intrigue sentimentale — Christiane Andermatt venue en cure avec son mari William pour soigner une prétendue stérilité découvre l’amour auprès de Paul Brétigny — le roman déploie une satire beaucoup plus âpre : celle du monde médical de l’exploitation des croyances thérapeutiques de la condition féminine et de la spéculation foncière et à la fin du XIXe siècle. Cette dimension financière donne au roman une résonance précise dans la France des années 1880 : lorsque Mont-Oriol paraît la faillite de l’Union générale survenue en janvier 1882 demeure présente dans les esprits. Maupassant avait lui-même commenté ce krach dans Le Gaulois le 25 janvier 1882 en dénonçant la fiction brutale de la richesse spéculative : « Les opérations sont fictives les bénéfices sont fictifs la valeur est fictive » : comme dans Mont-Oriol tout s’y achète se promet s’évalue et se fonde sur l’attente d’un profit futur. Même l’amour menacé de devenir une valeur d’échange. Bon exemplaire à toutes marges ; dos restauré.
