It's puckered around the title label from shrinkage as the glue dried. Light creasing to the front and the rear head edge.; Contains two short stories printed accordion-style both originally published in 1884. Printed first Idyll depicts two Italian strangers both from Piedmont Italy traveling by train to France. She is going to her new employment as a wet nurse and he indigent is hoping to find construction work. After alternating conversation and silence she who had not nursed a child in days offers her breast to the man. He had not eaten in two days. Printed next is The Legacy. A married couple discovery that that their mutual friend a single gentleman had died and had left his legacy of one million Francs to only the wife of the couple. The husband accuses the wife of adultery which she denies and they decide to split the money to avoid a public scandal. After resolving the legacy the husband weeps in private still believing his wife was an adulterer. French author Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant 1850-1893 was celebrated for his mastery of the short story form writing in humanist terms and producing at least 300 short stories. Both stories are printed letterpress printed in brown ink on the recto only of a single long leaf accordion folded to create 19 pages. Unpaginated. The text is laid loose in a 9 1/2" x 7" double-flapped folder of two sheets of folded cream stiff paper with a pasted down title label. The statement "Fifty-one copies comprise this edition; this is copy number 49" faces the colophon. The colophon states "All work beginning with the translation and ending with numbering was done by l'e´minence grise who is The Upstairs Press" The Upstairs Press is a device of the press showing the press name in a cloud and a rope ladder leading up to more clouds. The French "l'e´minence grise" translates to 'the gray eminence.' Design composition printing and all else were by Mildred Sherrod Bissinger proprietor of the Press. The accordion folded text is in Fine condition. Overall with the folder the condition is Very Good. OCLC finds 8 copies in institutions but its scarce in the market.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 19 pages . The Upstairs Press paperback
Opera incompleta. Volume uno di tre. Legatura in simil pelle, con titolo in oro al dorso e cornici dorate al piatto, protetto da sovraccoperta illustrata in entrambi i piatti, con bandelle, leggermente lesionata. Buono lo stato di conservazione, pagine ben tenute, velate da tonalità seppia, come i tagli, e illustrate da XVIII ( 18 ) tavole in bianco e nero e X ( 10 ) a colori. A cura di Mario Picchi.
