Foi publicada pela primeira vez em 1699 de forma anónima e veio a tornar-se numa das mais populares obras do século XVII com várias edições e traduções para todas as lÃnguas europeias e até em verso latino. Resgata personagens e mitos da antiguidade greco-romana para difundir valores morais e cÃvicos apresentando crÃticas ao contexto polÃtico e social de França. Bispo de Cambrai preceptor do Delfim de França desde 1689 membro da Academia Francesa de Letras poeta e escritor. Escreveu obras em diversos géneros e poesias mas as mais importantes e célebres são as obras com fins pedagógicos que ainda hoje são estudadas. As suas ideias sobre educação a sua simpatia por sociedades utópicas e as posições teológicas sobre o quietismo levaram a que fosse alvo de fortes crÃticas e se visse envolvido em polémicas nomeadamente com Bossuet.
