Bound in contemporary paste-paper boards soiled but sound; some staining to lower right corner of some of the leaves. With faults an acceptable copy. Appears to be the first edition printed by Zerletti who published a more expensive edition in 1788. This is the first appearance of the engravings by Giovanni Volpato 1740-1803 a professional engraver from Bassano who worked with the Remondinis' publishing house. "In 1762 he was brought by Bartolozzi to Joseph Wagner's shop in Venice" and worked with several printers until 1772 when he moved to Rome to run his own shop and open a school of engraving. In 1786 he published a book with 36 plates entitled Principi del Disegno. Raphael Morghen was among his many pupils in Rome. The in this edition of Les Aventures de Télémaque Volpato's his engravings are in the classical style and some of them demonstrate his skill capturing the moment and highlighting the action of the scene. He is best remembered for series of plates after the frescos in the Vatican. Hind Short History of Engraving and Etching p. 209. 1841870F10London: Willoughby and Co 1841 . Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A scarce mid nineteenth century edition of Hawkesworth's translation of Fenelon's classic didactic novel about Telemachus the son of Ulysses. First published anonymously in France in 1699 and first translated by Hawkesworth in 1768 Fenelon's didactic novel fills in a missing part of the plot of Homer's 'Odyssey' recounting the educational adventures of Telemachus the son of Ulysses as he is accompanied by his tutor the goddess Minerva in disguise. The novel proved unpopular with the French royalty upon its publication as Louis XIV believed that it criticised his reign which at the time was rife with war taxes and famine of the peasantry. With an engraved frontispiece and title page and numerous vignette illustrations throughout. The portrait frontispiece has been neatly hand-coloured by a prior owner.Undated; dated 1941 via Jisc. With eight pages of advertisements to the rear.A scarce edition of this mythological tale. Small octavo full brown leather binding with gilt spine lettering on red morocco label xxiv 402 pp. frontispiece 12 etchings. some rubbing along edges some foxing otherwise a very good copy.

François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon 1651-1715 archbishop of Cambrai theologian writer and teacher was an influential man at the court of Louis XIV. In 1689 he was appointed tutor to the young Louis de France Duke of Burgundy 1682-1712 at the suggestion of Madame de Maintenon for whom he was spiritual advisor. For his student François Fénélon wrote several instructive works through fables such as Les aventures d'Aristonoüs followed by an educational novel of travel and adventure entitled Les aventures de Télémaque fils d'Ulysse.

This work written and developed between 1694 and 1696 led to the disgrace of François Fénélon as his novel though pseudo-historical and utopian was perceived as a criticism of the Sun King himself. Indeed in Les aventures de Télémaque fils d'Ulysse Telemachus Louis de France Duke of Burgundy follows his tutor Mentor Fénélon through different city-states of Antiquity and is confronted with war and poverty problems which according to Mentor Fénélon are the results of the ambitious and unscrupulous advisers surrounding the leaders of these city-states. Fénélon warns his student against mercantile economic policies conflicting and aggressive stances regarding foreign affairs and developing a taste for excess and extravagance. Les aventures de Télémaque fils d'Ulysse were seen as an attack even a satire against Louis XIV and the way he governed.

François Fénélon lost his position as tutor in 1699 due to the publication albeit anonymous of his novel and fell from grace before being banished from court.

This publication is composed of a Discours sur la poésie épique et sur l'excellence du poème de Télémaque Les aventures de Télémaque fils d'Ulysse from book I to X followed by Les aventures Aristonoüs.
