Fenelon is perhaps most famous for his treatise on the education of girls published at the end of the seventeenth century. His Dialogues on Eloquence was composed around this same time and was published after his death. Fenelon's pedagogical writings were hugely influential in his day and remained so for decades afterward. This work in particular focuses on public speaking in a church or other religious setting. Fénelon criticizes both Ancients and Moderns giving preference to the eloquence of Holy Scripture. Du Cerceau's essay attempts to characterize French poetry and what makes verse specific in relation to prose.
