188992Wilby Norwich: Michael Russell 1994. Excellent provenance First and only edition with the ownership inscription on the front free endpaper of Colonel the Reverend J. W. Bell giving his record of service in the Gulf: "HMS Jufair 1964-66 Bahrain Trucial Oman Scouts Sharjah Sultan's Armed Forces - Bait al Falej" and with his pencilled annotations and markings to several pages. Bell remains infuriatingly elusive. His inscription refers to HMS Jufair the Royal Navy's permanent base at Mina Salman in Bahrain. The TOS was headquartered at RAF Sharjah and the Sultan's Armed Forces at Bayt al-Falaj in Muscat the site of the country's airport and the main operating base for its air force. Although not named in the book Bell's annotations reveal that he was witness to or directly involved in a number of events described. For example commenting on the TOS concentrating its presence in Sharjah to maintain law and order in May 1965 Bell notes "Things got quite difficult" p. 151. Regarding Ras al Khaimah's plans to unseat Sharjah's Sheikh Khaled he notes: "It got a 'bit dodgy' for 'Mutawa Mukadan'" p. 153. He has emphatically sidelined paragraphs covering De Butts' handover of command to Colonel K. C. P. Ive in April 1967 and enlargement of the camp at Sharjah to accommodate troops being withdrawn from Aden stating somewhat cryptically: "I had to make myself very scarce - ministering to the officer element the Para's in Bahrain the RC's" p. 163. This is a well-written and engaging account of the development of the unit originally formed in 1951 as the Trucial Oman Levies an armed gendarmerie. The Buraimi Incident followed by the Jebel Akhdar Campaigns in Oman led to its expansion into a fully equipped Bedouin brigade which was eventually absorbed into the Union Defence Force with the establishment of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Octavo. With 16 half-tone photographic plates maps in the text. Original red boards gilt-lettered spine colour pictorial endpapers after a painting of Jahili Fort Buraimi by David Shepherd. With dust jacket. Laid in is a handwritten slip with the author's telephone number and Eastington Glos. address he is named as the Rt. Rev. Michael Ashley Mann KSVO. Binding and contents sharp; unclipped jacket with just light signs of handling: near fine. hardcover
245Lancaster PA and New York NY: American Inst. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Murray Gell-Mann's Nobel-Prize winning work on the discovery of the "Eightfold Way" "Gell-Mann as naturalist collector and categorizer was well primed to interpret the exploding particle universe of the 1960s. New technology in the accelerators- liquid hydrogen bubble chambers and computers for automating the analysis of collision tracks- seemed to have spilled open a bulky canvas bag from which nearly a hundred distinct particles had now tumbled forth. Gell-Mann and independently an Israeli theorist Yuval Ne'eman found a way in 1961 to organize the various symmetries of spins and strangeness into a single scheme. It was a group in the mathematicians' sense of the word known as SU3 though Gell-Mann quickly and puckishly dubbed it the Eightfold Way. It was like an intricate translucent object which when held to the light would reveal families of eight or ten or possibly twenty-seven particles- and they would be different though overlapping families depending on which way one chose to view it. The Eightfold Way was a new periodic table- the previous century's triumph in classifying and thus exposing the hidden regularities in a similar number of disparate 'elements.' But it was also a more dynamic object. The operations of group theory were like special shuffles of a deck of cards or the twists of a Rubik's cube. "Much of SU3's power came from the way it embodied a concept increasingly central to the high-energy theorist's way of working: the concept of inexact symmetry almost symmetry near symmetry or- the term that won out- broken symmetry. The particle world was full of near misses in its symmetries a dangerous problem since it seemed to permit an ad hoc escape route whenever an expected relationship failed to match. Broken symmetry implied a process a change in status. Many of the broken symmetries of particle physics came to seem like choices the universe made when it condensed from a hot chaos into cooler matter spiked as it is with so many hard-edged asymmetrical contingencies. "Once again Gell-Mann trusted his scheme enough to predict as a consequence of broken symmetry a specific hitherto-unseen particle. This the omega minus duly turned up in 1964- a thirty-three-experimenter team had to canvass more than one million feet of photographs- and Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize followed five years later" James Gleick Genius. Particle Physics One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Introduction of the SU3 singlet-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. Prediction of the Ω- hyperon. Nobel prize to M. Gell-Mann awarded in 1969 'for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their reactions'." NOTE: Gell-Mann first introduced the concept of the Eightfold Way in a 1961 Cal. Inst. Tech Report CTSL-20 before developing his ideas more fully in his famous paper in The Physical Review. Square small octavo 69pp. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's brown paper over boards with vellum spine and top edge gilt. This collection is one of the finest in the western hemisphere and includes important groups of work by El Greco Goya Valaquez Murillo Valdes Leal and Juan van der Hamen y Leon. The catalogue contains the most comprehensive entries to date on all works in the National Gallery of Art; with a biographical outline of the artists; a description of and often new observations on the physical condition of each painting; critical discussions of such matters as attribution chronology identification of subject matter or sitter and a summary of previous scholarship. Other material which makes this catalogue the most recent and comprehensive study of these works ever is the important discovery by Dr David A. Brown a curator at the Gallery who identified a painting from the Italian period of Fernando Yanez da la Almedina. This discovery revises the understanding of this Spanish follower of Leonardo da Vinci and his relationship with his collaborator Gernado Llanos. Also the painting Bullfight often attributed to Goya is here assigned to Eugenio Lucas Vilzamil -- with a bonus offer-- . hardcover
