Leather is rubbed and shows scattered wear. There is some wear at spine ends. The volume number label on III is heavily rubbed. The joints of covers at spine are cracked though the hinges internal of volumes I and II are fairly solid. The hinges in Volume III are broke and the covers of Volume III remain barely attached by the cords. Institutional stamp of the Valentine Museum is seen on the front paste down of all three volumes though NO other institutional markings are noted. Text blocks are all tight. Scattered mostly light foxing is seen throughout all three volumes. Contents are otherwise clean and intact. Due to weight additional charges will apply for Priority and/or International shipping. . Thomas Nugent's English translation of Baron de Montesquieu's renowned and important work of political theory being an influential treatise of French law. The work is a classic of political history and influenced many important people and works including the Founding Fathers of the United States Constitution and Catherine the Great's 'Nakaz'. The work was seen as controversial to some and was eventually banned by the Catholic Church shortly after the English translation was published and was added to their 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum'. Media Piel a puntas de la época lomo cuajado en oro con cinco nervios y tÃtulo en tejuelo cortes tintados en color granate.- Esta rara primera edición debió ser impresa en Italia según se ve por sus usos tipográficos y también por su papel. Lo más probable es que fuera impresa en la ciudad de Florencia según nos indica BARBIER. El libro contiene un total de LIX cartas numeradas que incluyen las tres cartas en las que se cita crÃticamente a Mme. GEOFFRIN mas otras dos sin numeración a saber: "Lettre de la Duchesse d'Aiguillon a l'Abbe Comte de Guasco". Y la otra dice "Article d'une lettre du Baron de Secondat de Montesquieu a l'Abbe Comte de Guasco". Siguen dos versos que incluye el "Soneto de Adami Knight" Senador florentino que lo escribió en homenaje a Montesquieu tras su muerte. Esta edición original publicada en Florencia por el abad de Guasco en 1767 contiene 3 cartas en las que se critica a la Sra. Geoffrin. Por causa de esto la propia acusada se ocupó de hacer desaparecer gran parte de la edición e incluso persiguió a quien osara reeditar el libro con las dichas cartas. RARO. La encuadernación con algunas pequeñas rozaduras que han sido restauradas la esquina inferior externa de la tapa anterior tiene una pequeña falta de piel pero ha sido restaurada quedando muy bien. Las tres primeras hojas tienen en la cabeza y pie de las esquinas externas unas pequeñas marcas de oxidación. Por lo demás en su conjunto el libro presenta un buen estado.
