Spine a bit dulled a hint of rubbing to front joint alongside top compartment one leaf with a half-inch tear to the lower margin but a very pleasing copy with fresh bright leaves immense margins and a lustrous decorative binding.

Attractively printed with enormous margins this bibliophile’s copy of Montesquieu’s important poems on love is finely bound and profusely illustrated with a lovely triple suite of engravings. By far the most important work in this collection is "Le Temple de Gnide" first published by Montesquieu 1689-1755 in 1725 and immediately put on the Index because of its conspicuous sexual content. Composed of seven cantos this long prose poem explores the various forms of love from tender to erotic and is notable for the way it is constructed. The other two poems "Arsace" and "Isménie" are similarly tales of love set against Neoclassical and Orientalist backgrounds respectively. The poetry is accompanied by engravings of Noel Le Mire 1724-1801 after Charles Eisen 1720-78 and Jean Jacques François Le Barbier 1738-1826 which originally appeared in the 1772 edition of "Le Temple de Gnide" and the subsequent publications of the other two works. Furstenberg says that "the delicate sensuality of the women's bodies glorified in these illustrations was never outdone" and he indicates that they represented Le Mire's "lasting claim to fame." Cohen-De Ricci says the plates are "ravishing" both in terms of composition and engraving. The binding is a joint effort between Bernard David who trained with Gruel and gilder Jules Domont 1847-1931 who learned his craft from Koehler and Marius Michel père before setting up independently. According to Flety all the late 19th century binders who did not have a "doreur" in their own atelier turned to Domont whose expertise was widely admired. This copy also has a distinguished provenance. The library of Cortlandt F. Bishop 1870-1935 contained rarities of great value in the fields of illuminated manuscripts early printing and English literature but was especially rich in fine bindings. Bishop was in many ways the heir to the bibliophilic eminence of Robert Hoe the most famous of all American book collectors the first president of the Grolier Club and a renowned lover of fine bindings.

Early Edition of one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century treating the philosophical principles of law and government and the determining influence of geographical and economic factors on social thought customs and legal and political institutions. Montesquieu was unanimously advised by his friends including Helvétius and Fontenelle not to publish but he ignored them. Despite Helvétius criticism that the work was too moderate it was placed on the Index and the Sorbonne planned a regular censure of it. Although largely misunderstood or ignored by his contemporaries including the philosophes Montesquieus theories exerted a profound influence; "they underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French Revolutions and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated." Montesquieu paid no attention and it was printed in Geneva in the autumn of 1748. It consists of six main sections the first dealing with law in general and different forms of government and the second with the means of government military matters taxation and s o on. The third deals with national character and the effect on it of climate; a subject of peculiar originality and the one most discussed at the time. The fourth and fifth deal with economic matters and religion; the last is an appendix on law-Roman feudal and modern French. The most distinctive aspect of this immense syllabus is its moderation: a quality not designed to achieve official approval in 1748. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire visionary eccentric nor over-systematic.The scheme that emerges of a liberal benevolent monarchy limited by safeguards on individual liberty was to prove immensely influential.his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated" Printing and the Mind of Man. 180239Worcester: Printed by Isaiah Thomas Jun. sold by him and by Mathew Carey Philadelphia; also by the various Booksellers throughout the United States 1802. First US edition. Two volumes. Modern calf-backed marbled boards. Some browning of text generally light. Contemporary signature of "Jos. Allen" on titles. Enclosed in an open-end cloth case. The first American edition of Montesquieu's 1689-1755 classic work of political theory that helped form the American Constitution. Montesquieu first published The Spirit of Laws in 1748 in his native France as De l'esprit des loix anonymously in part because his works were subject to censorship. The book became recognized for its pioneering work on political theory and comparative law and was rapidly translated into other languages and published throughout Europe. Thomas Nugent the influential Irish historian and travel writer published the first English translation in 1750 but in 1751 the Roman Catholic Church placed the work on its Index Librorum Prohibitorum "List of Prohibited Books". Despite the book's censorship it would profoundly influence the American Founding Fathers and other political luminaries including Alexis de Tocqueville. The book was first printed in America by the influential revolutionary war printer and anti-British journalist Isaiah Thomas 1749-1831 and was sold and distributed by Thomas and fellow American printer and economist Mathew Carey 1760-1839. Montesquieu spent nearly twenty-one years researching and writing The Spirit of Laws which covers a wide range of topics including law philosophy government social life and anthropology. Montesquieu's work is perhaps best remembered today for its influential thesis that the best means for promoting and safeguarding political liberty is through a constitutional government that is subject to a separation of powers-an insight that would directly shape the formation of the American constitutional republic. The work also famously argues that successful political institutions must reflect the social and geographical aspects of the communities they govern and that legitimate governments are those that preserve legality and individual civil liberties. This edition was the first to be printed in the newly born United States of America and sets forth Montesquieu's enduring thought in thirty-one books that are divided into six sections. A masterpiece of political theory and sociology and a defining part of American history. Printed by Isaiah Thomas, Jun. sold by him and by Mathew Carey, Philadelphia; also by the various Booksellers throughout the Uni hardcover

17922006
A masterpiece of French Enlightenment in Catherine's Russia: very rare early translation of Montesquieu the first illustrated.

Completed in 1721 this important piece of French literature recounts in 161 letters the experiences of two Persian noblemen Usbek and Rica as they travel through France between 1712 and 1720. The two protagonists write to friends and mullahs commenting on numerous aspects of western Christian society particularly French politics and the Moors ending with a biting satire of the system of John Law.

The work therefore provides a subtle critique of the Ancien Régime disguised as the observations of naive foreigners. The Lettres persanes was an immediate success and has since been frequently reedited and imitated.

In Russia the text circulated widely among upper classes but it was available only in the original French or in other western European languages. The first complete Russian translation by Fiodor Pospelov was published in 1789 without any illustration after a few extracts had appeared in 1782. This was followed closely by the present edition with the text newly translated by the retired collegiate councillor Efim Roznotovskii 173792. Interestingly and paradoxically both editions appeared during the heights of the French Revolution which prompted in Catherine's Russia some clampdown on free-thought - the 1789 edition being even published by the State Academy of Sciences! There will not be any further edition in the 18th century.

Our edition is illustrated on the title page by an interpretation of Dassier's famous profile of Montesquieu captioned with the author's name in Russian. It was engraved by Johann Christoph Nabholz 1752-c. 1796 a German artist who then lived in St. Petersburg and produced many portraits of the aristocracy. This portrait was not included in the extensive study Portraits de Montesquieu. Répertoire analytique by A.
