He was skeptical of human reasoning; interestingly that does not keep him to be admired in France. This is a Very Good copy of an edition published in England but untranslated from the original French that contained ten volumes this is Book Eight. The publishers Nourse & Vaillant were prominent and prolific during the 18th Century. Full leather binding; spine with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 336 pages; endpapers and page ends are marbled. Text is very bright and clear. While a very sound little book there are several chips to the leather that do detract from its appearance. . Three volumes octavo contemporary dark marbled calf spines with raised bands lettered in blind labels replaced front covers lettered "Wakefield" in gilt capitals. <p><p>The sixth edition "corrected and amended" of Charles Cotton's translation. Cotton 1630-1687 English poet and writer contributor to The Compleat Angler is best known for his version of Montaigne "among the acknowledged masterpieces of translation" DNB. In contrast to Florio's extravagant Elizabethan prose of 1603/1613 Cotton's version was in turn suited to his age with a markedly dryer and plainer English.</p> <p>Cotton's translation holds significant importance in the literary and philosophical realms having helped spread Montaigne's profound and influential ideas to the English-speaking world. The "Essays" are a collection of personal reflections and philosophical musings covering a wide range of topics such as human nature morality education and the nature of knowledge. Cotton's translation not only preserved the essence of Montaigne's original work but also rendered it accessible to a broader audience enabling English readers to engage with Montaigne's profound insights. Cotton's efforts contributed to the spread and popularization of the essay as a literary genre shaping the development of English literature and thought. Octavo contemporary full speckled calf re-backed in calf-gilt to style with the original red morocco spine labels & raised bands. First edition of Cotton's highly regarded English translation of Montaigne's essays considered "among the masterpieces of translation" DNB with frontispiece portrait in each volume in contemporary calf boards. Volume 1 has contemporary ink marginalia at the bottom of the title page. It is very rare to have frontispieces in each of the 3 volumes. Half-titles are not called for. A beautiful very good set which has benefitted from some expert restoration to the board edges. "Montaigne devised the essay form in which to express his personal convictions and private meditations a form in which he can hardly be said to have been anticipated. The most elaborate essay the 'Apologie de Raimond Sebonde' is second to no other modern writing in attacking fanaticism and pleading for tolerance. He finds a place in the present canon however chiefly for his consummate representation of the enlightened skepticism of the 16th century to which Bacon Descartes and Newton were to provide the answers in the next" PMM 95. "Though regarded with suspicion by the Church and placed on the Index 1676 his work won the admiration of his own and succeeding generations… it was quoted by Shakespeare in The Tempest and… inspired the English essay as developed by Bacon Cowley Temple and Dryden" Reid 422. "How far his influence has extended is incalculable" Harris 105. "Cotton's Montaigne ranks among the masterpieces of translation" DNB. "The final work Cotton saw through the press was one of his most admired his translation of Montaigne's Essays three volumes 1685-6 which immediately supplanted that by John Florio 1603 and was still being reprinted well into the 20th century.
