He was Lord Mayor of London 1794–1795 and Member of Parliament for the City of London for nearly 30 years 1790–1818 and beyond in other constituencies. He was created a Baronet in 1802 by King George III and was well known for his philanthropy and influence in commercial expansion during the Napoleonic period. This is from his private library. All three volumes have the crest nameplate. <br /> <br /> Very nice 18th century English translation of this work which influenced so many of the thinkers of that time and up to the present. J. The new edition of this early eighteenth century work. Michel de Montaigne was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. His Essais were originally written between 1570 and 1592 and the first collection were published in 1580. In uniform calf bindings. Externally worn. Severe loss to spines and extremities with heavy rubbing to boards and to the remainder of spines. All joints are tender. Both hinges to volume I are weak and may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender with the rear hinge weak may detach in postage.
