L'ouvrage fut adapté plusieurs fois au théâtre et au cinéma, et notamment par Luis Bunuel en 1964. Un des 20 exemplaires de tête réimposés sur Chine (n°7), bien complet des couvertures avec le titre manuscrit sur papier de livre de compte. Parfaite reliure de Maylander.

Staining due to ink and paper. Significant of the denunciatory attitude that Mirbeau maintained in his articles this manuscript critical of the unworthy treatment of artists of genius by society is a final draft used for printing as indicated by the capital letters that delimit the paragraphs. The original leaves have been remounted on laid paper here pages from an 18th-century work Dissertatio Medica to facilitate their handling. unknown

Bradel binding in half sky blue cloth smooth spine lightly sunned decorated with a gilt floral motif double gilt fillet at foot cherry red shagreen title label marbled paper boards corners slightly bumped contemporary binding. Precious signed autograph inscription from Octave Mirbeau to Jean Ajalbert on the half-title page. Our copy is expanded with a four-page autograph letter dated and signed by H.G. Ibels in which he shares with his correspondent his momentary financial troubles the poor circumstances that led him to this situation and finally the solicitations from wealthy bibliophiles who covet his important collection of 18th-century manuscripts on the Convulsionnaires. Large marginal discoloration affecting the front cover as well as much more lightly the half-title page without touching the autograph inscription. Provenance: Jean Ajalbert library with his Japonist ex-libris in the Nabis style wood-engraved in a very small number signed with a monogram probably that of Félicien Rops. G. Fold traces inherent to postal handling. Octave Mirbeau thanks Maître Demange warmly and enthusiastically for having so brilliantly defended his anarchist comrade Félix Fénéon: "" Je n'ai pas l'honneur d'être connu de vous et je ne sais ce que vous pensez de moi mais je ne puis m'empêcher de vous remercier pour l'admirable plaidoirie que vous avez prononcée pour Félix Fénéon que j'aime de tout mon esprit et de tour mon coeur "" ""I do not have the honor of being known to you and I do not know what you think of me but I cannot help thanking you for the admirable plea you delivered for Félix Fénéon whom I love with all my mind and all my heart"". In 1894 the wavering Third Republic weakened by anarchist attacks including that of Auguste Vaillant at the Chamber of Deputies on December 9 1893 launched its campaign of repression and arrests against the anarchists with as its climax the illustrious Trial of the Thirty. The trial opened on August 6 1894 and among the 30 defendants were Paul Reclus Sébastien Faure Jean Grave and Félix Fénéon. Stéphane Mallarmé came to testify in favor of the latter before Maître Edgar Demange defended the famous art collector journalist creator of literary reviews Félix Fénéon. This trial ended with the acquittal of almost all the defendants and Maître Edgar Demange would continue his great career as a lawyer by notably taking the defense of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. This is followed Les Deux Bavardes by Mercure Galand Octave Mirbeau's play about a worker's strike and finally Eduoard Pailleron's best known and highly successful play Le Monde Ou l'On S'ennuie. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. From the Library of Ronald Lindsay. In a quarter leather binding over patterned boards. Externally generally smart. Lightly rubbed the boards with some moderate wear to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing to the endpapers pages are clean if a little age-toned.
