Un taglio al margine bianco della pagina di titolo per togliere una firma (che peraltro è presente nella pagina di titolo della Seconda parte). Una nota manoscritta, su un foglio ripiegato (cioè quattro facciate) riporta delle Observations sur le Livre de l’Esprit des Loix, tratte dall’Origine du despotisme oriental di Boulanger. Altre note manoscritte, per tre fitte pagine, sono contenute nell’ultimo foglio bianco e nel foglio bianco dietro la risguardia, e sembrano tratte dal Mercure de France del Novembre 1753. Terza edizione. Legatura coeva in tutta pelle, dorso a nervi ornato e dorato (piccola mancanza di pelle a un angolo), tagli rossi. Risguardie in carta marmorizzata. Condizioni molto buone, tranne il taglio indicato a un margine bianco, per questa preziosa edizione di pochi mesi successiva alla prima.

Contemporary full vellum spine expertly repaired minor worming to pastedowns end leaves tidemark to gutter margin through 1st half of textblock w/o the large folding dedicatory engraving very minor worming to spine endpapers still a good copy. First edition of this fascinating work dedicated to Pope Paul V filled with 2370 theses of rational natural and moral philosophy defended at length by the brilliant 15-year old Ottavio Farnese 1598-1643 son of the Duke of Parma displaying a deep understanding of Aristotle and other ancient philosophers. Of particular interest are the wonderfully executed woodcut calligraphic figures throughout the text of sphinxes figures personified allegories musical instruments vegetables plants animals such as turtles storks roosters lions frogs and grasshoppers.No reference this cataloguer could find appears to have identified “Brondulus†possibly G.F. Brondolo. Sadly the year after this brilliant disputation in 1613 Ottavio’s paranoid father the Duke of Parma Ranuncio I Farnese imprisoned him in the notorious Parma La Rocchetta prison stripped him of all his feudal titles and there he languished for the next 30 years dying most likely of the plague in 1643. According to Worldcat listings and descriptive catalogues there appear to be surviving copies with and without the double-page allegorical plate dedicated to Pope Paul V. Magnifiques et grandes lettrines Renaissance en tête de chaque livre. Brunet (II, 6) signale que c'est le texte de l'édition de Milan de 1499 qui a été reproduit à Paris. Non référencé dans Adams. Date de publication sur le verso de la page de titre et sur le dernier feuillet, au colophon. Edition partagée entre Josse Badius et Jehan Petit ; dans la plupart des autres éditions, c'est la marque de l'imprimeur Jehan Petit que l'on trouve, mais pas dans cet exemplaire où, dans la vignette représentant une imprimerie, on lit en lettres rouges Presso Ascensiansi. Reliure en pleine basane brune XVIIIème, pastiche d'une reliure Renaissance française à encadrements ; succession de filets d'encadrement et de frises aboutissant à un rectangle central. Dos à nerfs orné de semis d'étoiles à froid. Bon état d'ensemble. Quelques taches. Un accident au mors supérieur en queue avec manque. Page de titre doublée en marges avec manques comblés, angle inférieur doublé au feuillet suivant, un travail de ver en marge inférieure affectant les six premiers feuillets sans atteinte au texte, notes manuscrites du XVIème en marge de certains feuillets. La traduzione è attribuita a Domenico Cavallari, allievo di Giambattista Vico e dello stesso Antonio Genovesi. Una prima versione italiana di G.M. Mecatti uscì nel 1750. La ''Difesa'' appare qui in italiano per la prima volta. In fine del quarto tomo vi è un vastissimo Indice delle Materie, per entrambe le opere, da pag. 149 a 366 (Leggi nel rapporto con i vari esseri. Leggi positive, Leggi della natura. Della libertà del cittadino. Delle religioni. etc. etc.). Ogni aspetto sociale della Legislazione nei secoli è commentato in questo caposaldo del pensiero umano. Esemplare assai bello.. .
