200726252Hong Kong/Köln/London/Los Angeles/Madrid/Paris/Tokyo: Barnes & Noble / Taschen. Fine in Fine dj. 2008 c.2007. Reprint. Hardcover. nice clean copy with no discernible wear to either book or jacket. Movie Icons Series B&W and color photographs There are certainly better and definitely bigger books about Steve McQueen than this small-format tome 6"x8" but if you're in search of a kind of "essence of McQueen" you couldn't do much better. There's an intelligent introductory essay "Steve McQueen: King of Cool" by Alain Silver followed by a "Visual Filmography" which takes up the heart of the book and presents stills from all his films all credited to The Kobal Collection and beautifully reproduced in the best Taschen manner. The Chronology Filmography alas with just the director's credit plus McQueen's role and Bibliography are all quite brief but that doesn't take away from its pleasure as a pictorial survey of his career. All text and captions are in English German and French. The original 2007 Taschen edition seems to have been issued as a paperback only; this edition hardcover with dust jacket appears to have been produced basically for the American remainder market yet seems to be less common than the paperback. Go figure. . Barnes & Noble / Taschen hardcover books

An instinctive musician but one trained in the disciplines of counterpoint he wrote music that has a natural fluidity infused with the spirit of dance. It requires from the performer what Olivier Alain has called an 'active rubato'. Alain's preferred forms are the fantasy and the variation but with an acute sense of proportion an avoidance of exaggeration and the absolute sincerity of a generous passionate nature. Harmonies are immensely rich polymodal or chromatic; the composer loved sequences of 6th chords and the polytonality of superimposed triads." Black cloth with black and gold illustrated dust jacket . 319 pp. 14 color 294 bw plates. "Here are Brassai's iconic scenes of nocturnal Paris with its prostitutes and thugs its night workers cafes dance halls and theaters; here are the fog-shrouded streets monuments and bridges; and here is the literary and artistic elite of the Parisian avant-garde whom Brassai counted among his friends. Alongside these images and providing a deeper understanding of his working method are many previously unpublished contact prints and variations of familiar shots taken from a different angle differently framed or as part of a sequence that constitutes a veritable short story on film. Beyond these there are examples of Brassai's nude studies and magnifications of commonplace objects the engraved photographic plates that he called "transmutations" his drawings and sculpted pebbles the graffiti he found so fascinating - indeed everything to which he turned his imaginative mind throughout a long productive life." "With the close cooperation of Mme. Gilberte Brassai the artist's widow and with the support of Jean-Jacques Aillagon president of the Centre Pomidou and of Werner Spies director of the Musee National d'Art Moderne in Paris Alain Sayag and Annick Lionel-Marie have succeeded in producing the definitive summary of this important oeuvre. As an extra dimension the book includes penetrating excerpts from the writings of Brassai himself and of his friends and admirers Henry Miller Jacques Prevert and Roger Grenier; an interview with Gilberte Brassai and a biography compiled by her; and an extensive bibliography and list of exhibitions."--Jacket.
