A group of 40 letters and cards; correspondence between a young man and a woman friend who he met and worked with at the Jewish summer Camp Achvah; he later became a student at UC Berkeley. He had also attended the Jewish Camp Cejwin. Mostly the letters are from Edwin Finkelstein to his friend Natalie Levy back in New York with a couple of notes to him from her. The Achvah material is mostly camp gossip and scuttlebutt regarding the owners of the camp who according to the writer took advantage of the counsellors and workers: ".Concerning your job. You will have the same job and privileges as a regular counsellor. That is you will have the same hours curfews time off and days off. In regard to a bonus don't make me laugh last year only one person got a bonus.a whole $ 5. The only reason he got it was because his father did legal work form Mr. Barshad.Don't get involved in any counsellor uprisings.be good to your kids and you will get good tipslast year a good percentage of the girls were willing to go out on strike with the boys." Edwin F. works at Steve Cohen Boys' Camp in Hopewell Junction NY 1946 and writes of his work and play there during that summer; he continues to ask about and advise about Camp Achvah where Natalie is a summer counsellor. He notes that ".Achvah is a dump compared with this placehere were are treated like humans not like dirt." Nevertheless there is a great feeling of camaraderie among those who attend and work at the camps many reunions and get-togethers over the years. The last group of 6 letters are from UC Berkeley and the difficulties of coursework and enjoyments of attending that school and living in California. NOTE: ".In the 1920s and 1930s a recognition began to arise that the summer camp might play a significant role in Jewish education and the socialization of the Jewish child into Judaism. Samson Benderly the first director of New York's Bureau of Jewish Education was the first to recognize the unique opportunity that the summer camp offered for teaching modern Hebrew and other traditional Jewish values through immersing children in a Hebrew and Judaic environment. In 1927 he opened Camp Achvah the first Hebrew-speaking camp in Arverne on New York City's Rockaway peninsula. In 1932 he sought to expand the program and purchased a campsite in a rural setting in upstate Godeffroy New York. The expanded program retained the intensive Judaic program but was not Hebrew speaking as had been the program at the Arverne site." ref. Encyclopaedia Judaica 2007 "Jewish Camping" article. Other social and political events are remarked upon in the letter content for instance the high school student strikes and riots in the boroughs of NYC in 1945 which required police intervention and mention of a similar race related riot in Bergen College New Jersey regarding a disqualified black football player. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora' James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." wiki. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector so we suspect this was in his library at one time with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche 1870-1945. Knoche was born in San Jose California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. You’re still a ‘great looking broad.’†Also inscribed by one of Busby Berkeley’s male dancers actor James Baker: “To Gwen. One of Busby’s lovelies. Jimmie Baker.†Additionally the book is signed by actress Vicki Vinton another of Berkeley’s girls and she has signed it rather charmingly. The title page is a wonderful large two page photograph of Berkeley huddled with a bevy of beautiful women. Vicki Vinton is in the front foreground semi-reclining and Vinton has signed her name on one of her long lithe legs. The definitive coffee-table book on Berkeley written with his cooperation with spectacular illustrations of his film musicals. Contains a foreword by Ruby Keeler. Near fine copy with some slight spotting to the rear board in a very good dust jacket with some edge wear and rubbing at the folds. Difficult to find in this condition. CARTER BURWELL BERKELEY. Here is a brief account of the life of Carter Burwell Berkeley a devout and highly admired member of the Fork Church congregation during the early nineteenth century: He was born at Airwell Virginia on February 20 1768 and performed his early studies under the tutelage of a Mr. Bell an Irish scholar in a small log cabin near Offley Mill. His higher education was completed in 1793 with the receipt of a degree in medicine from the University of Edinburgh. / Dr. Berkeley returned to Virginia and practiced medicine from his old home until his marriage to Catherine Spotswood Carter. In the year of their wedding 1796 they built Edgewood which was to remain his residence and office well beyond her death. Each Sunday neighbors were invited to dine at Edgewood after church services and this event became a grand social and intellectual tradition along Ridge Road. / It was Dr. Berkeley's philosophy to practice faith and medicine together. One patient described waking late one night during a serious illness to find Dr. Berkeley kneeling by her bed and praying for her recovery. According to Brief Biographies of Virginia Physician by L. B. Anderson 1889 a patient was quoted as saying "We prefer Dr. Berkeley to anyone else because what he failed to accomplish by his medical skill he would secure by his prayers." / On Sunday morning November 3 1839 Dr. Berkeley was involved with his duties as chief warden when he was asked by two other doctors to visit a sick man as early as possible. "He was introduced into the room of the patient and seating himself by the bed gently grasped the wrist to feel the pulse. Not a word was uttered not a movement was made except to incline his head as was his custom during profound thought." In time the other doctors found that life has passed from the good doctor. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Erwin Tomash with warmest greetings for more than 20 years together in the computer field from Ed Berkeley October 11 1975." The recipient Erwin Tomash was an engineer who co-founded Dataproducts Corporation which specialized in computer technology specifically printers and core memory units. He is recognized for his early pioneering work with computer equipment peripherals. Tomash led the creation of the Charles Babbage Institute and is responsible for The Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information Technology and The Erwin Tomash Library. With Erwin Tomash's bookplate to the pastedown near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association linking these two pioneers in the field. Edmund C. Berkeley became famous in 1949 with the publication of his book Giant Brains or Machines That Think in which he described the principles behind computing machines called then "mechanical brains" "sequence-controlled calculators" or various other terms and then gave a technical but accessible survey of the most prominent examples of the time including machines from MIT Harvard the Moore School Bell Laboratories and elsewhere. In Giant Brains Berkeley also outlined a device which some have described as the first "personal computer" Simon. Plans on how to build this computer were published in the journal Radio Electronics in 1950 and 1951. Simon used relay logic and cost about $600 to construct. The first working model was built at Columbia University with the help of two graduate students. Berkeley founded published and edited Computers and Automation the first computer magazine.
