1878000011096London: William Tegg & Co 1878. First Simon edition. Hardcover. Good. Small 8vo. 5 vi-lii 5 6-220 pp. Bound in green cloth with both boards bordered in blind lettering and rule stamped in gold on the front board. Yellow/green endpapers and pastedowns. Algaier Reconstructing the Library of William James; Gay Wilson Allen William James; Mead 18. This is the first edition edited and with introduction and appendix by Simon. The free front endpaper has two ownership stamps of philosopher and psychologist William James the first is crossed out being the older 18 Garden Street address where James resided until moving to his new house in 1889 the second is the 95 Irving Street address in Cambridge where he lived from 1889 until his death in 1910. There is also a slip of paper tipped in to the front endpaper with "PHILOS. III." printed on it. This book is not in Algaier who lists all of James' books and pamphlets that were donated to Harvard University by James and others 2554 items nor is it listed in the catalogue of The Hocking Collection at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Therefore this book must be one of the many that were given away as gifts to colleagues or sold at the "yard sale" held in 1923. The photographs of James' library circa 1923 see Algaier p. 4-5 suggest that it consisted of at least 4000 volumes Algaier suggests it may be double that so a large portion of James' personal library is either lost or privately held. The book does contain underlining and light marginalia vertical bars to emphasize passages and reference numbers mostly in pencil but we are unable to ascertain if this is the work of James himself or a later owner. James is one of the most important American philosophers of the nineteenth century and books from his personal library are scarce in commerce. The book is in Good-only condition with rubbing and wear to the boards and the binding although holding is in jeopardy. William Tegg & Co hardcover

17161277391716. First Edition. LORD GREY OF WERK BERKELEY Henrietta. The Trial of Ford Lord Grey of Werk et al. For Unlawful Tempting and Inciting the Lady Henrietta Berkeley to Unlawful Love with an Intent to Cause Her to Live in a Scandalous Manner. London: J. Morphew 1716. Slim octavo period-style full paneled calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $2000.First edition of the verbatim transcript of this sensational 17th-century trial in which Lord Grey was charged with seducing the under-18-year-old sister of his wife ""with an intent to cause her to live in a scandalous manner with the said Lord Grey."" Handsomely bound. The prosecution of this scandalous case was ably handled by George Jeffreys; the defense was equally capable and the verbatim transcript of the proceedings vividly portrays the case's high emotional charge. ""In 1682 Lady Henrietta became a well-known figure of scandal when still a minor and under 18 following the revelation of her love affair with Ford Grey Lord Grey of Warke 1655-1701 the husband of her elder sister Mary. The intrigue seems to have begun in 1681 and continued for about 14 months before it was discovered by Lady Henrietta's mother Eventually the earl of Berkeley launched a lawsuit for unlawful seduction against Grey and his accomplices which was brought before the court of king's bench on 23 November 1682. Henrietta herself appeared at the trial but with her evidence the lord chief justice told her 'You have injured your own reputation and prostituted both your body and your honour and are not to be believed' State trials 9.176. As the court was breaking up the earl attempted to take his daughter away with him whereupon Henrietta announced that she was married to William Turner Grey's servant. A scuffle broke out in the courtroom as she refused to return home and her father tried to seize her by force The trial attracted a great deal of publicity and the story of Lady Henrietta's affair with her brother-in-law became the inspiration for Aphra Behn's Love Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister the first part of which was published in 1684"" ODNB. Bound with half title. Old ink annotations to verso of half title; small duplicate stamp to final text leaf.Only occasional faint foxing to text. Fine condition handsomely bound. hardcover

Description: "The first essay in David Berman's new collection examines the full range of Berkeley's achievement looking not only at his classic works of 1709-1713 but also Alciphron 1732 and his final book the enigmaic Siris 1744. Item two examines a key problem in Berkeley's New Theory of Vision 1709 : why does the moon look larger on the horizon than in the meridian The third item criticizes the view still uncritically accepted by many that Berkeley's attacks on materialism are levelled against Locke. Part 2 opens with Berman's two essays of 1982 - the first to show that Berkeley came from a rich and coherent Irish philosophical background. Next comes a discussion of the link between Berkeley and Francis Hutcheson and particularly their answers to the Molyneux problem which Berman takes to be the root problem of Irish philosophy. The fourth essay looks at the impact of the golden age Irish philosophy on eighteenth-century American philosophy where again Berkeley has a central position. The last item examines Berkeley's influence on Samuel Beckett. Part 3 shows the many-sidedness of Berkeley's career which is missed by those who concentrate exclusively on his work of 1709-1713. Each item here presents new material on Berkeley's life or on his works and thought; most of these are new letters not included in the Luce-Jessop edition of the Works of Berkeley. This section therefore can be seen a supplement to volumes 8 and 9 of the Works and also to Luce's Life of Berkeley. " -- with a bonus offer-- . Continuum hardcover
