From Foreword: Several years before the hundredth anniversary of the American Civil War the American Ordnance Association planned a series of monographs on the weapons of that conflict. The project has a twofold purpose. First to commemorate the event in some unique but appropriate way; secondly to make available to students of the Civil War authentic data on the characteriestics of the weapons with which the battles of that war were fought. The present work is devoted to cavalry weapons -- and with good purpose. As all students of strategy and tactics know the Civil War was an historic example of mobility reconnaissance and fast maneuver. Many of its battles rank in history as classical examples which have been used as guides by military leaders of all nations. In no area is this more cogent than that of cavalry tactics. Those tactics were dependent not only upon the skill of the cavalry commander the bravery of the individual cavalryman and the condition of his mount but also upon the capabilities of the wapons with which the units were equipped. Thus a knowledge of the military characterisitcs of the cavalry weapons of the time is essential to a proper appraisal of the decisions of cavalry commanders and the outcome of those decisions. In this respect the military characteristics of all wapons of all battles of all wars are basic elements in appraising the final outcome. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora' James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." wiki. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector so we suspect this was in his library at one time with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche 1870-1945. Knoche was born in San Jose California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Erwin Tomash with warmest greetings for more than 20 years together in the computer field from Ed Berkeley October 11 1975." The recipient Erwin Tomash was an engineer who co-founded Dataproducts Corporation which specialized in computer technology specifically printers and core memory units. He is recognized for his early pioneering work with computer equipment peripherals. Tomash led the creation of the Charles Babbage Institute and is responsible for The Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information Technology and The Erwin Tomash Library. With Erwin Tomash's bookplate to the pastedown near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association linking these two pioneers in the field. Edmund C. Berkeley became famous in 1949 with the publication of his book Giant Brains or Machines That Think in which he described the principles behind computing machines called then "mechanical brains" "sequence-controlled calculators" or various other terms and then gave a technical but accessible survey of the most prominent examples of the time including machines from MIT Harvard the Moore School Bell Laboratories and elsewhere. In Giant Brains Berkeley also outlined a device which some have described as the first "personal computer" Simon. Plans on how to build this computer were published in the journal Radio Electronics in 1950 and 1951. Simon used relay logic and cost about $600 to construct. The first working model was built at Columbia University with the help of two graduate students. Berkeley founded published and edited Computers and Automation the first computer magazine.
