Original green embossed cloth gilt-lettered on spine. Reprint after the 1872 first edition. Beginning as a humorist in the late 19th century David Ross Locke took on the pseudonym "Petroleum V. Though published as a popular historical biography Weems's "Francis Marion" has been long known to have been largely compromised by liberties he took with the manuscript and might now be looked upon as an example of early American historical or romantic fiction. Owner's ink signature on the title page endpapers with some ink and pencil markings scattered foxing; still a good solid copy. Very Good or better. Illustrations by Herbert A. Bone Charles Trevor Garland and James Henry Moser. A quite attractive Victorian juvenile in pictorial publisher's cloth. <br/><br/>Undated but presumably this McLoughlin edition is a ca. 1890s reprint. The title was originally published by Cassell New York per OCLC and Annual American Catalogue for 1887. Not noted in Baumgarten 2004; nor curiously are any other titles by Locke who published at least three works for juvenile audiences between 1886 and 1895. McLoughlin Brothers unknown books

Locke 1863-1930 was a prolific British writer best known for his short stories but he also wrote many novels and plays. from 1894 until his death in 1930. According to the Chambers Biographical Dictionary his "long series of novels and plays which with their charmingly written sentimental themes had such a success during his life in both Britain and America. His plays some of which were dramatized versions of his novels were all produced with success on the London Stage." His books were often on the US best-selling lists and many were adapted to film or stage. Idols tells the story of 4 innocent people whose lives were turned to turmoil by a murder committed by two robbers who were eventually captured and executed. This incident set ablaze a train of events that made the 4 protagonists "almost impersonal instruments of destiny." Octavo. Blue cloth-covered boards with light grey title to spine. Front right corner is bumped. Minor rubbing to hinges and edges. Front hinge is starting. Foxing to endpages though rest of interior remains clean and bright.
