A very long folding map on a scale of approximately 4½ inches to one mile with a cross section of the landscape on route running underneath on a scale of one inch to a hundred feet for altitude the enlarged plans on the second sheet are of various sizes and are either on a scale of one inch to 10 or 25 chains 1 dissected into 38 sections and 2 into 18 sections both mounted on linen folds into the original black morocco slipcase the brief title gilt lettered on the upper panel along with Locke's name. The foldover flap of the slipcase wanting though the other edges of the case have been neatly restored the maps in excellent condition. Scarce with no other copies traced. A rare and important polemic "written in bitter hostility to the Hudson's Bay Company and exposing their operations on the Pacific Coast and among the Indian tribes and fur traders from the earliest times" Eberstadt. "Scripps author of an official life of Lincoln visited the Lake Superior Country in 1855 and upon his return made an extensive study of the region from the Great Lakes westward with special reference to the fur companies the inhabitants Hudson's Bay Company water courses and minerals. He also points out the economic advantages of the Northern region for the United States" - Decker. "Scripps who was editor and publisher of the DEMOCRATIC PRESS had visited the Lake Superior country in 1855. He discusses here primarily the area of western Canada from Lake Superior to the Pacific with comments on the Minnesota region south of the international boundary. He has a good deal to say about the fur trade and the Hudson's Bay Company. A group of four photographs by Henry Robinson Locke who operated a studio in Deadwood South Dakota in the early statehood years. He photographed the Black Hills region. This collection of four photographs shows a gold mill in Deadwood a cyanide mill in Deadwood and two views of Lead City which was the home of the Homestake Mining Company during the period and continued to be a center for natural resource extraction for several decades following the initial Gold Rush period of the 1870s which brought the first wave of Euro-American settlers to the area. He photographed the Black Hills area Deadwood Crow Indians farmers miners railroads but also Calamity Jane 1885 and the Little Big Horn battlefield 1894. Scripps reports on the life of Abraham Lincoln in eight chapters touching on the major events of his life and career beginning with his early life and his move to Illinois through his transition from merchant to lawyer and legislator and covering his time in Congress with accounts of Lincoln's opposition to the Mexican-American War his support of the Wilmot Proviso and his involvement with the organization of the Republican Party. <br /> <br /> Wessen states that this edition was printed by Horace Greeley "from plates cast from the same type forms" as the 1860 Chicago edition which is considered the first published biography of Lincoln. Our New York imprint was "printed from plates cast from the same type forms" as the Chicago edition Wessen. It touches the major events of Lincoln's life and career devoid of some of the more romantic mythology e.g. Ms. Rutledge but including the far-fetched notion that Lincoln deliberately lost the 1858 Senatorial race in order to enhance his presidential prospects. <br/> Howes calls it the "most authentic of Lincoln campaign biographies." Lincoln's short-lived career in Congress is reviewed including his opposition to the Mexican War and his support of the Wilmot Proviso. A lovely association copy of the first biography of Washington which Weems revised and republished for several years after its initial publication circa 1800. Locke's Sidney's and Shaftesbury's letters were part of that inheritance. The correspondence between Locke and the others is printed in Corr. iii et seq.: "the dates of some of those from Locke are wrong" ibid. iii. 40n. the originals are now in the Bodleian Library. He has signed the inscription with initials and the fep proper as 'G.R. Parkin 1888'. The feps are yellowed but otherwise interiors pages are clean and white. Foxing to end papers a few stains to text block corners and spine ends with slight rubs and bumps a nearly fine copy 30702. 12mo pp. 1-3 4-143 144: blank flyleaves at front and rear original decorated black cloth front and rear panels stamped in blind spine panel stamped in gold and blind. This work prepared by a close acquaintance of Locke provides a biographical sketch of Locke; anecdotes about the reception of Locke's report; appendices presenting an authentic description of the Moon; and the text of Locke's successful hoax perpetrated in the NEW YORK SUN in August 1835 which pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the Moon. The revelations supposedly reprinted from the actually defunct EDINBURGH JOURNAL OF SCIENCE were so cleverly wrought that for a short time the report was given credence in scientific circles in the United States and Europe. The report was soon denounced as a hoax by the public press and Richard Adams Locke 1800-1871 a reporter for the SUN was identified as the perpetrator of the "ingenious astronomical hoax." Interest in the lunar discoveries increased the SUN'S circulation to more than nineteen thousand the largest of any daily of that time. According to William Gowans who reprinted the story in 1859 Locke's account created such public interest that the owners of the SUN published sixty thousand copies of it in pamphlet form. The pamphlet was published in September 1835 and every copy was sold in less than a month. Nevertheless the 1835 printings are rare and only a handful of copies survive. Self-styled seventh edition. General Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox" was one of the leading American commanders in the Revolution in the South. His brillant operations in the Carolinas kept thousands of British troops tied down and contributed immensely to ultimate American victory. Plain and unassuming he was widely beloved by his contemporaries and after his death this book began the process of his ascent to legend. Horry his second-in-command for part of the war supplied many of the facts although he was allegedly disgusted by Weems' flowery passages and disclaimed any connection with the book. What he disliked others embraced and the book went through many editions.
