ril. André Bernheim ha ottantotto anni, è un gallerista d'arte eccentrico e bon viveur, ed è già passato pressoché indenne attraverso prove fisiche tremende: ma poi è colpito da un ictus che gli blocca la parte destra del corpo, gli rende difficile comunicare e lo costringe a dipendere dagli altri. Non ci mette molto a chiedere a Emmanuèle, la narratrice, e all'altra figlia Pascale, di aiutarlo "a farla finita". Nonostante il dolore, loro accettano: sanno che per lui è insopportabile pensare di vivere immobilizzato e privato della sua dignità. E soprattutto non è un uomo a cui sia facile rifiutare qualcosa. Ma morire non è semplice, anche se lo si vuole appassionatamente. Ha inizio cosí un estenuante percorso: le due sorelle cercano un'associazione che le aiuti, ma in Francia per le persone non malate terminali il suicidio assistito non è legale e gli ostacoli burocratici, penali e morali si moltiplicano finché non trovano un'associazione svizzera. Siamo in autunno, arriva l'inverno, ma il padre chiede di rimandare alla primavera, e sarà a giugno - ennesimo prolungamento di una condizione irreale. Nel frattempo, André rifiorisce, sempre piú sano e, paradossalmente, sempre piú convinto della sua decisione (e la possibilità che le figlie possano finire nei guai a causa sua non lo tocca minimamente).
