19496579Denver CO: Gorgon Press 1949. First Edition. Original wraps. Very Good. 7 X 8 1/2 Inches. 60 PP. Issue #10 of only 11 that were issued. Gorgon was a general interest fanzine edited by Stanley Mullen of Denver Colorado. Mullen was active in science fiction fandom in the 1940s. THE GORGON was his most substantial fanzine and ran between 1947 and 1949. This particular issue features the VERY EARLY POEM "The Sorceress" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. This poem is signed "Marion Zimmer Bradley / "Astra" no more" in the top margin. This fanzine issue predates any published novel by Bradley who would go on to become famous for her lesbian fiction as well as the incredible Darkover series. Two original staples a bit rusty at spine. Faint wear to edges. A very attractive copy of this fanzine the earliest publication signed by Bradley available in commerce. Gorgon Press unknown

141 p. Dampstain. Title page torn without loss. 165mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. First edition. "James Bradley Thayer (1831-1902) was a Boston attorney, legal scholar, and professor at Harvard University. He had business dealings with Emerson and was one of a party of twelve who, with Emerson, went in a private Pullman car from Boston to California, and travelled there for several weeks, in 1871. Thayer wrote a number of diary-like letters to his wife while on the trip which later formed the basis for this account. This book also contains the letter that Thayer had written to the Boston 'Daily Advertiser' in which he attempts to clarify the response to a recent (1883) Boston lecture on Emerson given by Matthew Arnold." - From a description by Riverrow Book Shop. 198228395
New York:: Knopf 1982. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. In The Mists of Avalon the Bradley relates the Arthurian legends from the perspective of the female characters. The book follows the trajectory of Morgaine Morgan le Fay a priestess fighting to save her Celtic religion in a country where Christianity threatens to destroy the pagan way of life. The epic is focused on the lives of Morgaine Gwenhwyfar Guinevere Viviane Morgause Igraine and other women of the Arthurian legend. The Mists of Avalon is in stark contrast to most other retellings of the Arthurian tales which consistently cast Morgan le Fay as a distant one-dimensional evil sorceress with little or no explanation given for her antagonism to the Round Table. In this case Morgaine is presented as a woman with unique gifts and responsibilities at a time of enormous political and spiritual upheaval who is called upon to defend her indigenous heritage against impossible odds.
Knopf, hardcover
