First edition this being the primary binding. One of two hundred copies only. Inscribed by the author on the front free endsheet: "To my dear sister Mollie with much love Harry B. Smith. July 6 1894." Bambace suggests the binding design is "probably" Will Bradley's work. An uncommon book and imprint. Librettist bookseller and book collector Harry Smith was a frequent contributor to Francis Browne's incarnation of THE DIAL. Navy cloth. · Condition: Cloth discolored especially on the back which is also decayed chipped and brittle. "Burton Edward Eames. 39 Thayer Hall Cambridge Mass." is inscribed on front free endpaper. · Comments: Eames entered Harvard Law School in 1900 and was graduated in 1903; he thereafter practiced law in Boston. See Harvard College Class of 1900 Secretary's Fourth Report 1915 at 134. According the "Dorm History Search" "Buxton sic E. Eames" a law student occupied room 39 in Thayer Hall in 1901. For the year 1901-02 Evidence was a second year course taught by Professor Thayer. See Harvard University Catalogue 1901-02 at 546. After Thayer died on February 14 1902 Professor Beale continued the course for the remainder of the term. See "The Harvard Bulletin Feb. 26 1902 at 2". This appears to be the only occasion Beale taught evidence. In this copy there is extensive underscoring in pencil with a few marginal annotations up to page 250; starting at that point there are extensive ink MS notes on nearly every page and also lengthy MS notes on slips of paper tipped to pages 771 773 777 779 787 795 799 803 825 833 835 873 877 887 901 913 917 921 925 927 941 949 955 959 961 965 1009 and 1021. In the MS notes views are attributed to "T" on pages 552 583 635 and 639. Written boldly across the head of page 752 is the sentence "Professor Thayer died Feb. 14 1902." This first edition was followed by another edition of this address delivered at the fourth annual reunion of the Association of the Maryland line. Johnson was a secessionist from a notable Frederick Maryland family. Despite Maryland remaining in the Union Johnson was a significant in promoting the Confederate cause. The implication of both the authors' note and the physical make-up of the book is that the sheets less the publisher's prelims a substantial errata the 'Note' and the adverts are from an edition "roughly printed for our own and the actors' use." The text of the play was considerably revised when republished in 1918. Laid-in is a printed announcement for a production of "A Question of Memory" to take place at the "Opera Comique Strand W.C." under the direction of J.T. A scarce first edition of Ralph Bradleys 'Practical Points' concerning law with notes added by Joseph Ritson. The first edition of this work. A scrace work. 'Practical Points' is a collection of notes by the English barrister Ralph Bradley. His notes refer to points of practice and the technical details of conveyancing as they were in the eighteenth century when he was practising. Bradley was well respected within the law community being a contemporary of James Charles Booth who was considered the patriarch of modern conveyancing. With critical notes added by Joseph Ritson who had studied under Bradley. Ritson was an antiquary who devoted his spare time to literature whilst practicing law for his career. He may be best known for his attack on 'History of English Poetry' by Thomas Warton. In the original paper wraps. Externally smart. Light edgewear to the extremities with light marking to the wraps heavier to the rear wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional scattered spot and handling mark.
