189694701The Youth's Companion 1896. 1896. Very good. - A 16-1/4 inch high by 11-1/4 inch wide pictorial advertisement for Victoria Bicycles illustrated and designed by Will Bradley. A dreamy 14 inch high by 9 inch wide Art Nouveau illustration printed in blue on a gray background depicts a woman draped in a flowing gown standing with a bicycle next to tall flowers and trees within a floral frame. "Victor" and "Victoria" are printed within the floral borders at right and left of the image with "Bicycles / Overman Wheel Co. / Boston New York Detroit Denver San Francisco Los Angeles Portland Ore." framing the top and bottom. This rare advertisement by Will Bradley was published on page "iv" of Volume VII No. 8 of "The Youth's Companion" dated February 20 1896. Several black & white pictorial ads decorate the verso page "iii" of the periodical. A couple of short tears near the corners of the top edge are repaired with clear archival document tape from the verso. The edges of the print are slightly darkened from having once been framed. A Confederate Memoirs of Joseph Johnston & Jefferson Davis Civil War CSA Two works on important American military and political figures Joseph Johnston and Jefferson Davis Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general even though he trained at West Point. However his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War. In Tall Cotton says of this work: A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily therefore a hard-hitting attack on others particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess. The implication of both the authors' note and the physical make-up of the book is that the sheets less the publisher's prelims a substantial errata the 'Note' and the adverts are from an edition "roughly printed for our own and the actors' use." The text of the play was considerably revised when republished in 1918. Laid-in is a printed announcement for a production of "A Question of Memory" to take place at the "Opera Comique Strand W.C." under the direction of J.T. "Burton Edward Eames. 39 Thayer Hall Cambridge Mass." is inscribed on front free endpaper. · Comments: Eames entered Harvard Law School in 1900 and was graduated in 1903; he thereafter practiced law in Boston. See Harvard College Class of 1900 Secretary's Fourth Report 1915 at 134. According the "Dorm History Search" "Buxton sic E. Eames" a law student occupied room 39 in Thayer Hall in 1901. For the year 1901-02 Evidence was a second year course taught by Professor Thayer. See Harvard University Catalogue 1901-02 at 546. After Thayer died on February 14 1902 Professor Beale continued the course for the remainder of the term. See "The Harvard Bulletin Feb. 26 1902 at 2". This appears to be the only occasion Beale taught evidence. In this copy there is extensive underscoring in pencil with a few marginal annotations up to page 250; starting at that point there are extensive ink MS notes on nearly every page and also lengthy MS notes on slips of paper tipped to pages 771 773 777 779 787 795 799 803 825 833 835 873 877 887 901 913 917 921 925 927 941 949 955 959 961 965 1009 and 1021.
