L'édition définitive, publiée fin 1850, "neuvième édition refondue et augmentée de chapitres nouveaux". Elle contient la célèbre préface de juillet 1847 ("S'il n'y avait que des douleurs exceptionnelles et solitaires à soulager, la charité y suffirait peut-être. Mais le mal à des causes aussi générales que profondes…") ainsi que les textes, articles de presse et réponses des controverses entre L. Blanc et les personnalités du moment (M. Chevalier, V. Considérant, Guizot, etc.). "Un moment important dans l'histoire du socialisme" selon Eugène Fournière. Inséré primitivement en 1839 dans la "Revue du Progrès", ce texte devait d'emblée apporter la célébrité à L. Blanc. Rousseurs, piqûres et auréoles. Coiffes et mors frottés avec petits manques.
