Heidegger y propose une interprétation renouvelée du traité de Schelling sur la liberté humaine (1809), qu'il considère comme le « cur de toute la métaphysique de l'Occident ». L'analyse se concentre sur la distinction entre « fond » et « existence », explorant la solidarité entre la liberté et le mal. C'est également un texte crucial où Heidegger clarifie sa propre conception de l'existence par rapport à celles de Kierkegaard et Jaspers.
