Attributed to Nathaniel Bacon the work reviews the development of English political and legal systems from the earliest times through the reign of Edward III. Topics include Saxon and Norman rule the ranks of nobility court practices and the authority of the church into the seventeenth century. The research is frequently linked to John Selden. The politician and natural philosopher Francis Bacon Viscount St. Alban 1561-1626 wrote The Historie of.King Henry in 1621 during the most turbulent period of his life. That same year he had fallen into public disgrace owing to his support of governmental patents and monopolies. Bacon's enemies in parliament impeached and prosecuted him for corruption although such claims were dubious. King James allowed the trial to continue despite Bacon's desperate pleas. During the trial Bacon promised to write a good history of England in appeasement to the King. The result was The Historie of.King Henry dedicated to Prince Charles. Marrku Peltonen writes of the work "It should be seen in the context of humanist historiography rather than as a precursor of its modern methods.The central lesson of The History of Henry VII was that a ruler must remain open to accident and ready to seize the opportunities it offered" ODNB. King Henry VII 1457-1509 seized the throne at the momentous 1485 Battle of Bosworth Field. This decisive battle effectively ended the War of the Roses and installed the Tudor monarchy. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. At the end of the volume Rawley also included the New Atlantis. A Worke unfinished. Bacon was a scientist politician philosopher attorney general member of Parlement author etc. . He was also appointed Lord Chancery of the High Court but he had become best known for his promotion of the scientific method. He was knighted upon James I's ascension to the British throne. A handsome copy bound in 19th century 3/4 polished calf over cloth raised bands with title gilt portrait frontispiece and engraved title page had been mounted top edges of leaves were closely trimmed a bit frontispiece and title page have finger soiling text clean without foxing and beautifully printed. Yet the displeasure with which James I viewed his reforms prevented any of Bacon's legal works from being published during his lifetime. Central to this conflict was Bacon's belief ""in a large modern centralized nation-state and in a powerful dominant monarchy. Bacon was against medieval ideas of feudalism just as much as he was against medieval notions in metaphysics Bacon rejected Coke's theory of the supremacy of the common law preferring to ascribe supremacy to natural law or to what he went so far as to call reason What was needed was the vision of the statesman and this Bacon himself volunteered to contribute. The statesman was ready to agree that the judges should be honored as lions but the lions should be 'under the throne.' None of Bacon's legal works was published before his death in 1626; the first edition of this work appeared in 1630. Bound with a 1639 edition of The Use of the Law probably not by Bacon as often; this part first appeared in 1629 as the second part of another work by Sir John Doderidge entitled The Lawyer's Light see Gibson 192.
