Bacon's Essays the fruits of his political and social observations were first published in 1597 enlarged in 1612 and again in 1625. His long attempt to reform the intellectual habits of the European mind began with the publication of The Advancement of Learning in 1605 which attacked the unprofitable scholasticism that inhibited the growth of knowledge and the mental prejudices that helped to keep men in ignorance. Above all he deplored the poor and confused state of knowledge about the operations of the natural world. Novum Organum begun about 1608 published 1620 called for a systematic study of the natural world and of the causes of things and proposed the inductive method as the most reliable instruments of enquiry. Bacon worked out the principles of the experimental method in this book and developed them in De Augmentis 1623. Sylva Sylvarum a proposal of 1000 experiments to be undertaken was published posthumously in 1627 together with New Atlantis a Utopian fragment written about 1617 that urged the foundation of a college for scientific research. A short book that enjoyed much popularity in his lifetime was De Sapientia Veterum 1609 translated as The Wisdom of the Ancients 1619 which tried to demonstrate that the myths of the Greeks were coded accounts of their knowledge of the physical world." Nineteenth-century three-quarter morocco over cloth raised bands and gilt title to spine top-edge gilt marbled endpapers. Faint dampstaining to boards near top-edges moderate rubbing to extremities small chip to head of spine front joint and hinge just starting at ends corners bumped title page and final leaf re-hinged. Toning to text edgewear and light soiling to preliminaries and final leaves of text repair to lower corner of leaf D4 pp. 22-23 of first part below text. Two illegible later owner signatures to front endleaf one struck through another struck-through signature to title page. $1000. First edition. Bacon one of the great intellectuals of his era held the posts of Solicitor General Attorney General and Lord Chancellor during the reign of James I. The Elements of the Common Laws of England is the general title for a work that is comprised of two different treatises: A Collection of Some Principall Rules and Maximes of the Common Lawes of England and The Use of the Law Provided for the Preservation of Our Persons Goods and Good Names. The first contains a set of twenty-five maxims or regulae one of the earliest if not first collection of maxims on English law. These maxims are remarkable for their stylistic vigor intellectual rigor meticulousness and clarity. The Regulae was intended to be the first part of De Regulis Juris a codification of English law that Bacon never completed. Publié comme la troisième partie de l'Instauratio Magna, l'ouvrage offre une étude sur la longévité ou la brièveté de la vie chez l'homme et aborde la question de la prolongation de la vie. L'auteur s'interroge sur la possibilité de vivre plusieurs centaines d'années, comme les hommes avant le déluge, et propose quelques témoignages contemporains relatifs à de rares grandes longévités, voire exceptionnelles, en citant notamment le cas de la comtesse de Desmond, qui aurait vécu 140 ans (Operation super exclusionem aeries II, 14, p. 269). La philosophie de Francis Bacon (1561-1626) fut l'une des plus influentes au XVIIe siècle, avec celle de Descartes. Il a encouragé le développement de la méthode inductive d'investigation scientifique, en s'opposant à la méthode scolastique qui avait cours depuis le Moyen Âge. Il rejetait la logique déductive d'Aristote et pensait que la science devait s'intéresser au monde physique. Précocement, il pensait que la chaleur est un mouvement, identifiait la force magnétique et la gravitation, affirmait que la lumière voyageait à une vitesse finie et reconnaissait l'idée de la conservation de la masse (Heirs of Hippocrates n° 398). Bacon a également pensé la question de l'euthanasie et a livré sur le sujet des réflexions d'une telle importance qu'il a été crédité, à tort, d'avoir forgé le terme d'euthanasia.
