18860008048Boonville NY. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting diary kept by a young woman in upstate New York in 1886. Measuring 5 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches the slim volume contains about 150 pages including memoranda. The diary portion is 100% complete. The covers binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Tucked into the diary are three newspaper clippings. These are obituaries published in the local papers. Two refer to the death of her mother in 1914. The third refers to a man who is possibly related to her by marriage. There are also 2 photographs in the diary - 1 is a family grouping and the other is a portrait of a young woman. Research confirms that the picture of the young woman is indeed Jennie Bacon. Interestingly in the same pocket that held the photographs was a folded paper package that contains a small calibre bullet casing. The flyleaf is inscribed "Jennie Bacon Layden NY Jan 4th 1886". Research establishes that she was born in 1870 in Iowa. Her family moved to Lewis County NY at some time in her early life. This makes her 16 when she began to keep this diary. She lives at home on a farm with her parents and her brother Arthur. Jennie Bacon passed away in 1949. The year opens with her attending a local school which she enjoys very much. Interspersed with her daily attendance are the many tasks that she carries out daily: "Pleasant and warm. Up at six. Washed the dishes and went to school. Had nearly all my lessons good. Knit some on my mittens. Got a certificate of vaccination today had a good time at school today. Pa went to Boonville and got the mechanic today" Jan 18 "Snowed and blowed late going to school this morning some drifts half way up the house sides. Up half past seven. Went to school had a very good time but way behind in my lessons. I wanted to stop History but Mr. Wadleigh would not let me. He lent me the history he had" Jan 21. Mid-march her schooling comes to an end and daily entries revolve mostly around the seemingly unending tasks of keeping the house: "Rained most all day. Up ten min past six. Went to school today and it is my last day this term. Felt very badly did not like to leave." Mar 19. ". Sarah and I have worked hard all day. We cleaned the parlour hall closet and cellar . I am very tired tonight" May 21. "Her entries describe cooking cleaning sewing and farm tasks such as milking making cheese and churning butter. ". Did the mornings work then I went to washing got it all out before dinner put away the wash things . ground coffee made biscuits hunted eggs sprinkled clothes in the evening set up my skirt again. I am sure tired tonight" Oct 11. This diary is very well-written and gives and excellent detailed account of the tasks and responsibilities of maintaining a home in rural America in the late 19th century. It is rich in detail. There are a great many references to local people and local places which can provide valuable cross-referencing. This would be a superb resource for local historians or researchers studying 19th century rural life in America and the role of women at that time and place.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1880s GILDED AGE UNITED STATES LEYDEN NY UPSTATE NEW YORK BOONVILLE NY ONEIDA COUNTY LEWIS COUNTY JENNIE BACON GROWING UP IN RURAL AMERICA FARM LIFE SCHOOL EDUCATION SCHOOLS IN 1880s WOMEN'S STUDIES PHOTOGRAPHS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. Contents: title 1647; To Consideration 2pp; Contents listing 4pp; Prologue 4 pp; text pp 1-323 Finis; Table 11pp; Finis; Title 1651; contents 2pp; Preface 20pp; text pp 1-307; table 8pp; Finis. The politician and natural philosopher Francis Bacon Viscount St. Alban 1561-1626 wrote The Historie of.King Henry in 1621 during the most turbulent period of his life. That same year he had fallen into public disgrace owing to his support of governmental patents and monopolies. Bacon's enemies in parliament impeached and prosecuted him for corruption although such claims were dubious. King James allowed the trial to continue despite Bacon's desperate pleas. During the trial Bacon promised to write a good history of England in appeasement to the King. The result was The Historie of.King Henry dedicated to Prince Charles. Marrku Peltonen writes of the work "It should be seen in the context of humanist historiography rather than as a precursor of its modern methods. The central lesson of The History of Henry VII was that a ruler must remain open to accident and ready to seize the opportunities it offered" ODNB. King Henry VII 1457-1509 seized the throne at the momentous 1485 Battle of Bosworth Field. This decisive battle effectively ended the War of the Roses and installed the Tudor monarchy. Bacon's lesson dovetails with his economic and natural philosophical works as he often advocated for decisive epistemic and economic risk. ODNB and Wikipedia. Printed by R[obert]. 51-5187London: Petersburg Press 1971. One page prospectus for the portfolio with original polaroid by Bacon stapled on. NY Met: "In 1969 at the end of a characteristically wine-soaked lunch at Robert Carrier’s London restaurant with the artist Francis Bacon 1909–1992 Hamilton asked Bacon to photograph him against the drapes of the dining room. The first exposure was blurry from Bacon’s tipsy handling of the Polaroid but Hamilton found the image to have an affinity with Bacon’s distinctive style of painting. Working with oil on collotype copies of that portrait Hamilton produced seven studies from which Bacon was to select his favorite. He chose the seventh study in which Hamilton had covered the blurred curtains with a particularly Bacon-esque violet." London: Petersburg Press, 1971 unknown
151839New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art 1975. First edition of this collection featured at the Metropolitan Museum in 1975 focuses on themes of loss grief and the intense psychological exploration of the human form following the death of his lover George Dyer. Oblong octavo original black wrappers with the front wrapper die-cut to reveal color self-portrait illustrated throughout. Presentation copy inscribed twice in red felt tip by Bacon's muse friend and collaborator photographer Peter Beard: On the first page of the introduction "For Suzan with warmest thoughts and regards as ever Peter Beard"; and on the first page of the interview section "for a dead-ele book in the works—like 1984 MOMA Peter Beard 4/13/83 57th 63rd 60th." Francis Bacon and Peter Beard first met at a gallery opening in 1957. They became fast friends brought together by their shared personal and artistic motivations. Bacon was particularly inspired by Beard's famous aerial photographs depicting decomposing African elephant carcasses. They were massively influential on his meditations on death and decomposition: "For me the most poignant are the ones of decomposing elephants where over time as they disintegrate the bones form magnificent sculptures which are not just abstract forms but have all the memory traces of life's futility and despair." Bacon painted nine major portraits of Beard during his career and used his likeness for many other works. Upon his death in 1992 his apartment contained more than 200 of Beard's photographs signifying their lasting connection and collaboration. In 1972 the Beard conducted a series of interviews with Bacon in which they discuss how Beard's photographs influenced his painting dubbed the "Dead Elephant Interviews." Excerpts from these interviews appear in this catalogue for the first time. In very good condition with damp-staining to the top of the front panel rubbing and a small tear to cut-out edge. An exceptional association. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes crucifixions and portraits of close friends his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth set against flat nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series" and his work which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures the 1950s screaming popes the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures the early 1960s crucifixions the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends the 1970s self-portraits and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. From the mid-1960s he mainly produced portraits of friends and drinking companions either as single or triptych panels. Following the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971 his art became more sombre inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. The climax of this later period is marked by masterpieces including his 1982's "Study for Self-Portrait" and Study for a Self-Portrait—Triptych 1985–86. The Metropolitan Museum of Art unknown

Published. to justify the Long Parliament's war against Charles I with a continuation appearing in 1651 the work has been referred to as 'the English Francogallia'. it argued with unrelenting force an anti-royalist ideology of enormous persuasive power. This was the radical ancient constitution which. was first fully articulated during the civil wars by polemicists such as William Prynne and Bacon himself. Early a mainstay of the Long Parliament's cause the ideology consisted of the following propositions: first while government in general was from God the particular form came from the people. Writing a summation of his work in 1651 Bacon re-emphasized the continuity of an elective and contractual monarchy and a parliament which oversaw its proper functioning. With a salute to both past and present he wrote at the very end of his tract: 'as I found this nation a commonwealth so I leave it and so it may be forever'" ODNB. Wing B348B.
