In -8°, (2), XXXI, (1), 215, (7). Mezza pelle. Half calf. The cartesian theory of “tourbillons”, on the planets’ motion, was outdated when this book was written and printed. According to Descartes the planets were pushed in their trajectories by “ether” turbulences (he denied the existence of empty). Fontenelle decided to write this book mainly because of his “ultracartesianism”, but he decided to publish it not under his name, to avoid the reproach of scientific french community.
