Either-Or Volume 1 translated by David F.Swenson & Lillian Marvin Swenson 387 pp Volume 2 translated AND INSCRIBED BY by Walter Lowrie 304 pp. Princeton University Press 1944. Complete in 2 volumes. First Edition in English. <br /> <br />"Enten-Eller was written before he was twenty-nine. It is a curious bundle of papers essays semi-dialogues and notes seemingly ill-assorted but in fact dialectically arranged. Adopting what he called an 'aesthetic attitude' he held that this consisted in balancing possibilities and that in matters religious and ethical it was up to the individual to make his choice. Choice as the title of his work suggests was at the root of Kierkegaard's theory. There can be no system of existence only a system of ideas. From this he develops his thesis of "Existence" since taken up by the modern Existentialist in which human beings considered as subjects not objects are the only real existence: their reflective as opposed to active nature being focused on the 'acts' of making perpetual decisions" PMM. <br /> <br />CONDITION: Very good in original cloth with mylar-covered dustjackets. <br /> <br/><br/> Princeton University Pres hardcover

The first was in 1944 101 years after the work's first publication in Denmark as Enten-Eller. In 1841 the 28 year old Kierkegaard made the brave but unhappy choice to break off his brief engagement to Regine Olsen for reasons which are still obscure. The making of this decision this act of resolution lit in him the spark behind this bold work which sees Kierkegaard pitting two sides of his personality against each other the aesthete of the first volume being at odds with the ethicist of the second. This was an attack on rather than an affirmation of Hegelian synthesis and one of the founding works of Existentialist philosophy: ""Choice.was at the root of Kierkegaard's theory. There can be no system of existence only a system of ideas. From this he develops his thesis of 'Existence'. in which human beings considered as subjects not objects are the only real existence: the reflective as opposed to active nature being focused on the 'acts' of making perpetual decisions"" PMM 314.Being produced just after the war and subject to paper rationing the plain dustwrappers are printed on the reverse of very colourful blue and yellow dustwrappers for The Grand Book of Girls. This work which contrasts ethical and aesthetic attitudes towards life established his reputation as an important thinker. "Published in two volumes in 1843 Either/Or is an influential book written by the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard exploring the aesthetic and ethical 'phases' or 'stages' of existence. Either/Or portrays two life views one consciously hedonistic the other based on ethical duty and responsibility. Each life view is written and represented by a fictional pseudonymous author the prose of the work depending on the life view being discussed. For example the aesthetic life view is written in short essay form with poetic imagery and allusions discussing aesthetic topics such as music seduction drama and beauty. The ethical life view is written as two long letters with a more argumentative and restrained prose discussing moral responsibility critical reflection and marriage. The views of the book are not neatly summarized but are expressed as lived experiences embodied by the pseudonymous authors. The book's central concern is the primal question asked by Aristotle 'How should we live''" -- Wikipedia ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Soren Aabye Kierkegaard 5 May 1813 - 11 November 1855 was a prolific 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian. Kierkegaard strongly criticised both the Hegelianism of his time and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Church of Denmark. Much of his work deals with religious themes such as faith in God the institution of the Christian Church Christian ethics and theology and the emotions and feelings of individuals when faced with life choices. His early work was written under various pseudonyms who present their own distinctive viewpoints in a complex dialogue. Kierkegaard left the task of discovering the meaning of his works to the reader because "the task must be made difficult for only the difficult inspires the noble-hearted". Scholars have interpreted Kierkegaard variously as an existentialist neo-orthodoxist postmodernist humanist and individualist. Crossing the boundaries of philosophy theology psychology and literature he is an influential figure in contemporary thought. Princeton University Press hardcover
