Frontispiece silver print 4 1/4 x 3 1/4" by Dorothea Lange after a painting by Olga M. Ackerman with gilt ruling and decor; tissue guard. Title page with red woodcut designed by H. von Schmidt. Red titles and marginalia enlarged initials in red and blue. Printed by the Grabhorn Press San Francisco. <br /> <br /> The original letters appear to address "Mein lieber Doctor" from 1914 through 1920 one of them not dated altogether 21 pages. A payment note on printed Bush Street letterhead and a magazine clipping "The Late Oscar Weil" by A. Pupil dated April 17 1921. <br /> <br /> Educated as a musician Oscar Weil 1839–1921 enrolled as a private in the Union Army at the beginning of the American Civil War and retired as a major at the end of the war. Injuries incurred during the war prevented him from pursuing his career as a violinist. Weil turned to composing and wrote music critiques for the Argonaut after settling in San Francisco.<br /> <br /> The book contains the Oscar Weil Memoir letters to Oscar Weil his contributions to the Argonaut to "The Occident" at the University of California including "The Mundwyler Collection of chamber Music at the University of California" a contribution to the San Francisco Call on the paintings of Francis McConas an informal talk before the Music Section of the Delphian Club in Alameda and words spoken at his funeral by Stewart W. Young. Compositions of Oscar Weil are listed in a separate chapter at rear. Binding with light wear along edges light bumps at corners and lightly sunned spine. Papers uncut at bottom and foredge. A large collection of works by and concerning Simone Weil French philosopher political activist and Christian mystic. There are 16 paperback editions of Weil's works in both French and English along with an anthology from the Penguin Modern Classics series and Writings selected by Eric O Springsted Orbis Books Maryknoll NY. There are 6 hardback biographies of Weil including a near fine first edition by Francine Du Plessix Gray Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2001 and A Sketch for a Portrait by Richard Rees Oxford University Press 1966; the others are by Jacques Cabaud such as A Fellowship in Love Harvill London 1964 and Simone Weil a New York at a Londres Plon 1967. The biographical volumes in paperback include Le tourment de Simone Weil by Francois d'Hauteville Utopian Pessimist by David McLellan and La Métaphysique Religieuse de Simone Weil by Miklos Veto. At least four of the books belonged to British theologian and religious broadcaster Vernon Sproxton who in 1962 wrote and produced an edition of Viewpoint for the BBC on the life and work of Weil. Sproxton's copy of Waiting on God borrowed from the BBC Library is here along with 'Simone Weil biografia di un pensiero' by Gabriella Fiori which is inscribed "To Vernon Sproxton with a lively souvenir of our meeting through the great Simone". The books are generally in very good condition. The ownership inscription of British academic V Blackburn appears in several titles along with her annotations.
